One person was killed and seven others were injured Saturday evening at a shopping mall shooting?in the heart of downtown Toronto, officials said.

Toronto police Constable Victor Kwong said?an interior search of the two-block-long mall?ended with?the shooter?still at-large, CP24 television reported.

One victim, a 25-year-old man,?was pronounced dead at the scene;?two victims, a man in his 20s and a 13-year-old boy,?were in critical condition,?Kwong said. Two women and a man?were seriously wounded and one woman was grazed by a bullet.

?A 30-year-old pregnant woman?injured during the rush out of the mall?went into?labor, CP24 reported.

Police Chief Bill Blair said at a news conference that bystanders hit by gunfire were in the?"general vicinity" of a targeted victim, CP24 reported. The 13-year-old boy was a "totally innocent bystander," he said.

Police, firefighters and paramedics swarmed Eaton Centre after reports emerged of a shooting at 6:23 p.m. near the food court, CTV television reported.

Video from the scene showed paramedics attending to what appeared to be a victim inside the mall. Paramedics were also seen rushing a male on a stretcher into an ambulance.

The 280-store mall was shut and evacuated, CTV reported.

Police sealed off several surrounding intersections.

Photos from the scene showed shoppers flooding out of the mall into the downtown streets, which are among the busiest in Canada's largest?city.

Blue Jays player sprints away as shots fired

CP24 television reporter Jackie Crandles said she heard police and security "running around the mall yelling at people to get out of the mall, that the shooter was still inside, and that unless they wanted to get shot, they should leave."

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie tweeted that he was "pretty sure someone just let off a round (of) bullets in eaton center mall" and that he "just sprinted out of the mall."

Ujjawal Patel, 28, told The Globe and Mail?newspaper he was inside the Eaton Centre when he heard 12 to 15 shots ring out. He quickly fled, he said.

"I was so scared,"?Patel told the newspaper. "If it can happen in the Eaton Centre, it can happen anywhere."

Marcus Neves-Polonio, a 19-year-old food court busser, told The Globe and Mail he was walking when a man started firing near the Big Smoke Burger.

Neves-Polonio said he saw one person shot in the chest and two people on the ground. He ducked under a table.

"I just hoped he wouldn't go in my direction," he told the newspaper.?

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford visited the scene and offered condolences to shooting victims and their families and vowed to support victims and police, CTV reported.

"This incident is absolutely terrible," Ford said, according to CP24. "We want to apprehend the shooter as fast as possible."

Weekly Round-Up ? Journeying Beyond Breast Cancer

girl_with_lassoTime for this week?s round-up of?the best of the blogs which I?ve read over the past week. These are the posts that have moved me, taught me something, inspired me, and which I?ve wanted to share with you. Remember, if you have written or read a post recently which you would like me to share with readers, then please leave a comment below.

I am starting off with a round-up of the bloggers who took up Anne Marie?s writing challenge to us this week. Here is what she prompted us to think and write about:

What are those phrases, those words, those things you?ve heard spoken (or written) that have caused you to become irritated?? Annoyed?? Angered to the ?I?ll seriously hurt you? point?? Gotten cranky over?? Were they said to you?? About you?

Jan answered the writing challenge on her blog and made the excellent point that she counters the insensitivity by educating the public through her talks and presentations. Beth made me laugh out loud as I read her responses to the insensitive comments that have been said to her ? be warned! some of them are jaw droppingly crass. And Lori?s contribution to the debate is both eloquent and intelligent? ? another must read.

Lois continues the series of posts, interspersed with her poignant and beautiful poetry about losing her mother. I find it heartbreaking to read these, but am also grateful to find what is in my heart echoed in her words.

Poetry is also the order of the day on The Paw Paw Salad blog and Yvonne?s mother is the subject of her latest post, as she recounts the love and care which goes into the packages crafted lovingly by her mother for her.? There is a lot to ponder in Yvonne?s post, and I encourage you to read it and reflect on its contents.

Isn?t it wonderful when we learn new things about our friends in the blogosphere and find ourselves saying I never knew you did that ? and so it is with Jackie this week, who revealed herself as a biker chick. I loved how she draws analogies between how motorcycle riding is like breast cancer.

Debbie hosted her first guest blogger this week,? Annette Ramke, co-author of?Kicking Cancer in the Kitchen : The Girlfriend?s Cookbook and Guide to Using Real Food to Fight Cancer.

Kathi is crowdsourcing opinions on breast reconstruction on her blog and her post will be of great help to those who are about to go down this same road. I thought her method of? choosing a surgeon to perform the operation makes a lot of sense.

Florence has shared an incredible story with readers about how cancer taught one woman to love life again and Lani has a moving tribute to another cancer loss to our world on her blog.

Renn has found a post on her blog that she wrote exactly a year ago, just after her cancer diagnosis, but before her treatment began. As I said in my comment to her, I think it?s incredible when we can look back on how far we have come on our journey through our writings. Nancy?s Point is also reflecting on her own journey with cancer as she writes about how the painful memories of her bilateral mastectomy live on? ? a theme also echoed in Bringing Up Goliath.

And now I want to introduce you all to a new (to the round-up) blog by Audrey Birt. Audrey is the Director for Scotland of Breakthrough Breast Cancer and has recently been diagnosed for a second time with early breast cancer. This week, she writes about mindfulness and music ? a wonderful combination indeed.

School?s out for summer and Nancy?s anticipation and excitement at the summer days ahead is infectious. ?When you are looking forward to the promise of something you have come a long way forward on your journey? wrote one of Nancy?s readers and I think it is a wonderfully true statement. I hope wherever you are in the world, that too will make happy memories this summer with your loved ones.

Yours with love

Marie xxx

(AP) ? Egypt's ex-President Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison Saturday for his role in the killing of protesters during last year's revolution that forced him from power, a verdict that caps a stunning fall from grace for a man who ruled the country as his personal fiefdom for nearly three decades.

The harsh sentence against the 84-year-old former leader appeared aimed at defusing tensions ahead of a divisive runoff presidential race that pits Mubarak's last prime minister against the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate.

Mubarak, the first Arab leader to be tried in his own country, remained silent inside court cage while his once-powerful sons appeared nervous and had dark circles under their eyes. His elder son Alaa whispered verses from the Quran.

The 84-year-old Mubarak was then ferried in a helicopter away from the police academy that was used by the court in Cairo.

Scuffles between Mubarak supporters and opponents broke out inside and outside the courtroom after the verdict was read, reflecting the deep polarization of the country since Mubarak was overthrown on Feb. 11, 2011.

Thousands of riot police cordoned off the building to prevent protesters and relatives of those slain during the uprising from getting too close. Hundreds stood outside, waving Egyptian flags and chanting slogans demanding "retribution." Some spread Mubarak's picture on the asphalt and walked over it.

Mubarak and his two sons ? Gamal and Alaa ? were acquitted on corruption charges, but the sons still faced a separate trial on charges of insider trading. Ex-interior minister Habib el-Adly also was sentenced to life for the protester killings. Six other security officials were acquitted.

Judge Ahmed Rifaat delivered a strongly worded statement before handing down the sentences. Mubarak, who wore sunglasses and a light brown jacket over his clothes, and his co-defendants were in an iron cage.

Rifaat described Mubarak's era as "30 years of darkness" and "a darkened nightmare" that ended only when Egyptians rose up to demand change.

"They peacefully demanded democracy from rulers who held tight grip on power," the judge said.

Rifaat, who was presiding over his last court session before he retires, said Mubarak and el-Adly did not act to stop the killings during 18-day days of mass protests that were met by a deadly crackdown of security forces on unarmed demonstrators. More than 850 protesters were killed, most shot to death, in Cairo and other major cities.

Mubarak's verdict came just days after presidential elections have been boiled down to a June 16-17 contest between Mubarak's last prime minister, one-time protege Ahmed Shafiq, and Mubarak's top foe, a Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohammed Morsi.

Celebrate National Cancer Survivors Day! : Healthymagination

By Healthymagination | Posted June 1 2012

Statistics show that cancer can affect everyone: young and old, women and men, all around the world. There are over 100 types of cancer that can affect any part of the body. Just in the year 2008, 6,617,844 people were diagnosed with cancer worldwide, according to World Health Organization data. That?s one out of every two men and one out of three women diagnosed with cancer throughout their lifetimes.

A serious disease like cancer is a bombshell, a shock that tells us that no one is invincible. On June 3rd, Cancer Survivors Day will be celebrated worldwide, an event devoted to all cancer patients that have fought and those that are still fighting to overcome the disease and carry on with their lives.

The National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation defines a ?survivor? as anyone living with a history of cancer; from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. This day is a chance for communities around the world to demonstrate that they have an active and productive cancer survivor population.

As part of this initiative, GE Healthcare has created a Twitter hashtag #CancerFreeMe, to encourage survivors to share their stories and achievements. It can also be used to show admiration and support for those who have survived the disease. On Sunday, we will also be making live our first Pinterest board, ?Cancer Pintherapy,? to share visual content about cancer. We want to show support and share what lessons cancer survivors have been able to teach us through their journeys

1. Cancer doesn?t mean ?game over,? It means it?s time to fight for life with every ?healthy? weapon you have, with treatment and care that only you can give your body: positive thinking and determination. This doesn?t mean you can?t be upset, or even angry. Don?t lose sight of what you want: to get better and to beat the disease.

As breast cancer survivor Nelly Gupta moved through treatment, journal writing helped her cope. ?Often, after pages of dark musings, something lighter would break through?today, the sun is shining and I am aware of a feeling of pleasure. Life is fragile and tenacious. Maybe accepting that duality is key to integrating cancer into my life?,? she wrote recently in the healthymagination blog.

2. Exercise to release endorphins. The most traditional forms of treatment for most cancers are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation; which are all invasive and can take their toll on patients, making them tired and weak. During this difficult time, exercise and a good diet is essential. Exercise can be anything from working out in the gym to taking walks in the park; regular exercise releases valuable endorphins that will help you feel stronger and happier. A good diet will help keep energy levels up and give the body an extra push to fight against the disease.

3. Fighting cancer isn?t just about feeding the body. The benefits of having a support group of family and friends that visit regularly and help out with the day to day chores will help boost morale, give everyone involved peace of mind and fire up the will power to overcome the disease. Make a plan and delegate responsibilities; family and work can adapt to your treatment.

4. Communication between doctors and patients is crucial; there is nothing scarier than being in hospital and going through treatment without knowing what?s happening. The treatment might sound scary, but it?s good to know what the steps are and when they will be completed; it makes patients stronger and allows them to have a more positive outlook.

That?s also true when the doctor becomes the patient. When James Porter, MD, who specializes in treating men with prostate cancer using robotic surgery, developed the disease himself, he told the Healthy Outlook blog, ?I had a huge insight. I had to trust my doctor and appreciated what an amazing amount of trust my patients had in me. It?s helped me tremendously as a physician to have been in that spot and gave me empathy for what patients feel.?

5. Remember that preventing the onset of the disease is better than treating it. You can reduce your risks of developing cancer up to 40% just by keeping fit, according to CDC data. Also, through early detection, many cancers have been found in early stages and can be treated earlier on.

For some people, cancer might come as a complete surprise. That?s exactly what happened to Gaetano Scroco. He was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid cancer by chance. Thanks to early detection, he received treatment a lot faster.??I just want to emphasize the importance of early detection and that you need to see a doctor for a regular check-up once a year?, Gaetano said. ?It?s been one year since I had my cancerous Thyroid removed. I am feeling fine. So far I am cancer free.?
