Elder Caregiver Blog in Sierra Vista, Arizona: Senior Care: Where ...

What elder support services are available in this area? Where does one begin to look for information? How does one learn about what kind of help is needed? Read below about a few ways to find help, from local to national resources.

Local Resources and Directories

The local Area Agency on Aging's
Directory of Elder Resources is a valuable tool for anyone who wants to research the help available here. Everything from adaptive aids to visual support are listed.

The Sierra Vista Chamber of Commerce has an online directory of members. You can search by category or by name.

The Sierra Vista Regional Health Center has several useful links.

Google

Use Google or another search engine. Do not just search for elder care. Also search for elder care sierra vista and elder care sierra vista arizona, or elder care cochise county, home elder care huachuca city arizona, etc. You should almost always include in your search term the locality where you need a service.

Also search for senior living, assisted living, independent living, aging in place, senior care, home health care, elder caregiver, medication reminders, elderly transportation, dementia care, Alzheimer's care, long distance care, home delivered meals, grocery delivery, geriatric care manager, incontinence care, toileting assistance, companion care, attendant care, custodial care, home health aide, diabetes care, housekeeper, family caregiver, respite care, or any term that narrows down your search.

Some online directories that come up in these searches will make referrals to facilities and agencies. Some of the these, I believe are doing a good job of vetting the providers of services. However, many of these directories require the providers to pay a fee. Personally, I do not pay fees for referrals. I have never received a client by that method when I tried it. Nor have I heard of any home care provider in this area that considers this a viable method to receive referrals. It also adds to the cost for the client. Even though the service is free for the client, businesses do have to raise their fees to cover the fees they pay to these directories. I think they are unnecessary and expensive.

The search term "elder care" is so common, that many of these directories show up in that search. Using "home health care" will give you more agencies that actually provide services. Another good way to get actual providers is to use your search term in Google Maps.

Yellow Pages

You can also bypass some of these referral directories by searching paper or online yellow pages provided by the telephone companies that serve your local area. In this area, try Qwest's Dex Knows, or Yellowbook.

Blogs and Social Sites

More and more, elder care providers are using blogs, Facebook, and other social sites to provide information. Blogs I like to follow are in the side bar. (Though I do need to add a few more good ones.) A few good Facebook pages are:

National

The Elder Care Locator is a government site that lists national and government sources to begin looking for help. It also has information on many topics that you will find helpful in starting your search. You can search by topic or by location. This is a good place to start when you are not even sure what kind of help you need.

Other national resources:

Comfort Keepers, which I'm naturally partial to, has good information and links as well.

Verifying Quality

The Better Business Bureau is online of course. Does the business you are considering have a BBB accreditation or other well-known assurance of quality?

Telephone

When you are ready to start telephoning for help, you may want to ask your local Area Agency on Aging and local businesses, acquaintances, physicians, and friends about what they have heard about the providers you are considering. Although there are online recommendations, one does not know the people making the recommendations or the complaints. There is no quick way to determine if the comments are bogus.

Or just pick up the telephone and call us. If you do not know where to start, let us ask you a few questions and then we can make a few recommendations and referrals for free. Maybe your parents live here and just need a few meals, but they do not want a caregiver cooking meals in their home just yet. We can refer you to the agency that provides home delivered meals.

This is not an exhaustive list of resources, but this should be more than enough to get you started. Good hunting.
