Linfield College didn't have to go far to fill the vacancy for the position of men's soccer head coach. Chuck Bechtol, a former player for the Wildcats and a 1992 Linfield graduate, accepted the position, the college announced today.

Bechtol is our All-Valley Boys Soccer Coach of the Year, as we announced Wednesday.

The morning after: PlayStation Vita sales go cold during first full week in Japan

It's hard to set much store by early sales performance, particularly after the evergreen 3DS faced such a rocky road. Nevertheless, the Vita's latest stats do look disappointing for such a highly anticipated -- not to mention high-quality -- console: after shifting a remarkable 321,000 units during its first two days on sale in Japan, it could only muster 72,500 in the whole week between December 19th and Christmas Day. In comparison, the PS3 sold 76,000 units during the same period, while the 3DS rang up half a million. This doesn't necessarily reflect a lack of interest, however: there have been stock shortages, and it's also possible that buyers are waiting to make sure that all the launch bugs get cleaned up. As for us, our alarms remain firmly set for February 22nd.

US extradites war crimes suspect to Bosnia (AP)

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina ? The United States has extradited a Muslim Bosnian woman accused of killing Bosnian Croat civilians during the 1990s Bosnian War, authorities said Tuesday.

The prosecutor's office said Rasema Handanovic, 38, has arrived in Bosnia and will appear in front of judges Wednesday.

Handanovic ? who has a son and parents in the U.S. ? was extradited a week after the U.S. handed over her alleged comrade Edin Dzeko, 39, who is accused of taking part in the same killings.

Both are alleged to have belonged to a Bosnian Army unit that attacked the southern Bosnian Croat village of Trusina in 1993, killing 18 civilians. Witnesses say she personally shot some victims in the head.

Handanovic had been living in Beaverton, Oregon, and was arrested in April at the request of Bosnian authorities.

She immigrated to the U.S. and became a citizen in 2002. Dzeko immigrated to the U.S. in 2001, and became a naturalized citizen in 2006. He had been living in Washington state.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Donald C. Ashmanskas had denied Handanovic bail in April while she awaited the ruling on her extradition, saying that she posed a danger to society in the U.S. and Bosnia. Dzeko told a judge at his November extradition hearing in Seattle that he wants to be tried in Bosnia and clear his name.

Handanovic and Everett are accused of killing 16 or 17 people in a tiny mountain village called Trusina on April 16, 1993. Such charges carrying a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison.

The charges are based on the statements of fellow combatants who were given anonymity and state protection by the Bosnian government in exchange for their testimony.

Civil war among Bosnia's three main groups ? Muslims, Serbs and Croats ? broke out in 1992 and lasted until 1995, killing 260,000 people and driving 1.8 million from their homes. Muslims and Croats were allied against the Serbs at the start of the war, but they became enemies when Croat forces sought to capture territory held by the Bosnian army.

War crimes trials have been occurring since the end of the war. The worst atrocity was Bosnian Serbs' slaughter of 7,500 Muslims in Srebrenica in July 1995. The killings galvanized international will to end the war.

The testimony from combatants differs somewhat, but the underlying narrative, included in the prosecution's file, is consistent.

According to it, Handanovic's unit rounded up a group of Croat residents and, along with three captured soldiers from the Croatian military, bound and shot them, the combatants said.

As they lay dying, she "shot into the heads of two or three (Croat) soldiers who were lying on the ground and showing signs of life," a combatant testified. "She might have shot more of them, but I cannot remember now."

(AP) ? Rod Blagojevich's days of reckoning arrive Tuesday when a federal judge opens a sentencing hearing for the disgraced former Illinois governor on 18 corruption counts, including trying to auction off President Barack Obama's old Senate seat.

The impeached state executive-turned-reality TV star has good reason to feel anxious and afraid at the two-day hearing in Chicago. He faces the prospect of 10 or more years behind bars.

If Judge James Zagel settles on a sentence Wednesday of more than a decade, that would make it one of the stiffest penalties imposed for corruption in a state with a long history of crooked politics.

Prosecutors will ask Zagel to imprison the twice-elected governor for 15 to 20 years, arguing he has not only shirked all responsibility for his crimes but repeatedly thumbed his nose at the U.S. justice system.

Blagojevich has already paid a price in public ridicule and financial ruin, the defense argues in proposing a term of just a few years. They also seem bent on an approach judges often frown upon at the sentencing stage: Continuing to insist their client is innocent.

Both sides could finish their pitches to Zagel during Tuesday's hearing, which was moved to a large ceremonial courtroom to accommodate expected crowds. But Zagel says he'll wait until Wednesday to pronounce a sentence ? possibly so he can sleep on it.

The 70-year-old judge, who played a judge in the 1989 movie "Music Box," must answer nuanced questions according to complex sentencing algebra, including whether any good Blagojevich accomplished as governor counterbalances the bad.

In describing the humiliation his family has faced, the defense cited Blagojevich's appearances on NBC's "Celebrity Apprentice," where he struggled to use a cellphone, and his wife, Patti, eating a tarantula on the reality show, "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!"

After sentencing, Zagel will likely give Blagojevich weeks before he must report to prison. Once there, the man heard scoffing on FBI wiretaps about earning a low six-figure salary would have to take a prison job ? possibly scrubbing toilets ? at just 12 cents an hour.

Blagojevich's sentencing comes just days before his 55th birthday and three years to the week of his Dec. 9, 2008, arrest.

The jury deadlocked in his first trial, agreeing on just one of 24 counts ? that Blagojevich lied to the FBI. Jurors at his recent retrial convicted him on 17 of 20 counts, including bribery.

Legal experts have said Blagojevich needs to display some remorse when, as expected, he addresses Zagel Tuesday or Wednesday. But the big unknown is whether the often cocksure ex-governor will beg for mercy at the hearing or yet again protest his innocence.

A flat-out apology isn't always considered a must. If it isn't sincere, it can only anger a judge.

The defense could call others to speak in court. But as Blagojevich became politically radioactive, longtime friends scattered, so it's not clear who would be willing to speak for him now.

Wives often plea for leniency, but Zagel likely wouldn't view Patti Blagojevich sympathetically. On FBI wiretaps, she was heard encouraging her husband's bid for campaign cash or a top job in exchange for an appointment to Obama's vacated seat.

AP source: Ex-VP Dan Quayle to endorse Romney

(AP) ? Former Vice President Dan Quayle is endorsing Mitt Romney for president, Republican officials told The Associated Press Monday.

Quayle plans to announce his support for the former Massachusetts governor Tuesday afternoon at an event in Paradise Valley, Ariz., where Quayle has a home.

Quayle served as vice president under President George H.W. Bush. He was a House member from Indiana for two terms and a U.S. senator.

Quayle has largely stayed out of the national political spotlight in recent years, though he did mount an unsuccessful presidential bid in 2000. A series of gaffes during his vice presidency made him the subject of late night comedians' punch lines.

His endorsement helps illustrate establishment GOP backing for Romney, who has been trying to consolidate support among party stalwarts despite repeated challenges from conservative alternatives. The latest, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, has been leading in polls both nationally and in critical early states.

Quayle served under Bush, who met with Romney last week at his Houston home. The elder Bush did not offer his endorsement.

Quayle's son, Rep. Ben Quayle, was elected to the House of Representatives in 2010.

A GOP official familiar with Quayle's thinking says the former vice president is backing Romney because he views Romney as the most credible candidate in the race. The official requested anonymity to discuss Quayle's endorsement ahead of the official announcement.

Hawaii coach McMackin retires after 4 seasons (AP)

HONOLULU ? Hawaii coach Greg McMackin retired Monday after a disappointing 6-7 season and missing the postseason for the second time in his four years leading the Warriors.

An emotional McMackin made the announcement at a news conference with dozens of players watching on. He met earlier in the day and Sunday night with athletic director Jim Donovan and Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw to discuss his future.

"Hawaii has meant a lot to my family and me," said McMackin, reading off a brief prepared statement without taking questions. "I have decided to retire from my position at this time. I believe in my players and their potential for success."

Associate coach Rich Miano will serve as interim coach until a replacement is selected. A search committee will be formed to launch a nationwide search for a new coach.

McMackin just completed the fourth year of his five-year contract that pays him a base pay of $1.1 million annually. He will forego $500,000 owed in his final year, "which I hope will help strengthen the UH football program," he said.

"I want to thank my players, my coaches, the staff and the good people of Hawaii," McMackin said. "I wish you well. Mahalo."

McMackin was 29-25 overall at Hawaii, including 0-2 in bowl games, with one winning season in 2010.

The Warriors lost at home Saturday to Brigham Young, 41-20, finishing one win shy of earning an automatic berth to their hometown Hawaii Bowl.

Coming off a 10-win season, Hawaii began this year favored to win the Western Athletic Conference and with high hopes behind its star quarterback Bryant Moniz. But Hawaii was plagued by inconsistency and injuries.

With each loss, calls for McMackin's ouster grew and attendance at home games plummeted.

Donovan said McMackin's decision was voluntary and stressed that the coach was not forced to resign.

He and Hinshaw thanked McMackin for his service, including improving his student-athlete academic progress rates.

"I respect his decision to retire from this position at this time and understand that he continues to think about the best direction for his team now, as he always has," Hinshaw said. "I am grateful for his many contributions and wish him and his family the very best in their future."

McMackin previously served as Hawaii's defensive coordinator under former coach June Jones who left for Southern Methodist shortly after leading the Warriors to the Sugar Bowl in 2007.

Shortly after Jones' departure, Hawaii signed McMackin to a five-year deal that increased his base salary by 10 times to $1.1 million annually, making him the highest paid coach in school history.

McMackin also served as the San Francisco 49ers' linebackers coach from 2003-05. Before that, he was the defensive coordinator for three seasons at Texas Tech. He was also the defensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks from 1995-98 and at several colleges, including Miami.

Monti takes Italy's austerity plan to lawmakers (AP)

ROME ? Italy's new premier began trying to persuade a skeptical Parliament that his new plans to cut spending and boost growth will return Italy's ailing economy to health, as Europe entered a crucial week for the survival of the 17-nation euro currency.

Premier Mario Monti was briefing both Parliament chambers Monday on the package, which includes euro30 billion ($40.5 billion) in spending cuts and tax hikes and euro10 billion ($13.5 billion) to boost Italy's anemic growth.

Monti's government agreed Sunday to slap taxes on primary residences and luxury goods like yachts, high-performance cars and private airplanes, increase the age at which retirees can draw full pensions, trim the cost of Italy's political class and give incentives to companies that hire women and young workers.

"Without this package, we believe Italy would collapse, Italy would go into a situation like that of Greece, a country we admire but we don't want to imitate," he told the Foreign Press Association before heading to Parliament.

The package, passed as an emergency decree, takes immediate effect but Parliament must still approve it within 60 days. The Senate president has said he expected passage before Christmas, although lawmakers already were indicating they want changes.

Monti acknowledged Monday that some of the more painful measures might aggravate Italy's looming recession, with the government forecasting an economic contraction of up to 0.5 percent next year and followed by flat growth in 2013. But he said the measures were necessary and if they helped to bring down Italy's bond yields, that would give Italy more financial relief than any negative impact from individual measures.

Markets appeared to welcome the measures: The yield on Italian 10-year bonds was down 0.41 percentage points at 6.14 percent Monday, and the Milan Stock Exchanged traded in positive territory, with banks benefiting the most.

Unions blasted the pension reform as "socially unbearable" and two unions announced a two-hour strike for next Monday. Politicians on all sides called the measures severe but many appeared resigned to "holding our nose and voting," as Maurizio Sacconi, a labor minister under ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi, put it.

Democratic Party lawmaker Vannino Chiti indicated center-left lawmakers would try to spread more pain to the well-off, favoring more taxes on the wealthy and higher penalties on money repatriated from overseas tax havens.

"They are stringent measures. We will try to distribute them better," Chiti told Sky TG24.

Monti, a former EU commissioner, has been under extreme pressure to come up with speedy and credible measures that will persuade markets to stop betting against the common currency. Italian borrowing costs have spiked since October, which could spell disaster if Italy is unable to keep up payments to service its enormous euro1.9 trillion ($2.6 trillion) debt, which is equivalent to 120 percent of its GDP.

Italy needs to refinance close to euro200 billion ($270 billion) of that debt by May.

Unlike Greece, Portugal and Ireland, EU nations that got bailouts after their borrowing rates skyrocketed over 7 percent, Italy is the eurozone's third-largest economy and is considered to be too big to be bailed out. An Italian default would be disastrous for eurozone and could send both Europe and the United States into recession.

Olli Rehn, the European commissioner for economic and monetary affairs, welcomed Monti's package as "a very important step to shore up the public finances and support economic growth, while preserving social equity and fairness."

He said the "timely and ambitious" measures showed new economic decision-making from Italy.

On Friday, eurozone leaders are holding a critical summit to prevent the collapse of the common currency; expectations are growing that they will agree to a tighter integration of the 17 EU countries that use the euro.

"We need absolutely to avoid one thing, that the euro ? which was born to unite the people of Europe even more ? divides them from a psychological point of view," Monti said.

He said his technocratic government, which has no politicians, was in a position to push through the painful reforms necessary to secure Italy's future because it did not have to worry about future elections.

"We want to save Italy, but we also want to be the technical figures, and then disappear from the scene, with the full trust of the world and of public opinion," Monti said.

Monti said his new measures were designed to be as fair as possible so the sacrifices are equally shared; he is renouncing his own salary as premier and economy minister.

And on Monday, he warned that more financial reforms were on the way: including opening up Italy's rigid labor market and reducing the duplicate functions of provincial governments.

The measures approved Sunday include a 2 percent increase in value-added tax from the second half of 2012 from 21 percent to 23 percent.

Other taxes include a new tax on first homes to replace one annulled by Berlusconi plus higher levies and second and third homes, and new taxes on boats over 10 meters (30 feet) long, luxury cars and private helicopters and planes. The measures left out any income tax increase on high earners, which had been opposed by Berlusconi's conservatives.

Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, chairman of luxury carmaker Ferrari, said the luxury auto tax doesn't "make me the happiest person in the world, but I think when you have to do something, it has to have an effect on everyone."

Church-owned buildings escaped being assessed property taxes; Monti, who has one of Italy's most influential lay Catholics in his Cabinet, said the issue hadn't been considered by the government yet.

At the same time, the measures cut employment costs, give fiscal breaks to companies that invest to grow their businesses and increase investments in local public transport.

The measures raise the pension age to 66 years for men in 2012 and for women by 2018, and also increases to 42 years and one month the years of service for a man to retire with full benefits, 41 years and one month for a woman. The reforms include a hold on inflation adjustments for larger pensions.

Unions and center-left politicians have been particularly critical of the pension measures, saying certain classes of workers, including those who do physical labor, shouldn't be forced to work extra years. They also complained that women who take time off to raise children will have to work well into old age to meet the seniority requirements to draw a pension.

"It is not easy, especially because these cuts hit heavily on the pensions," conceded Italian worker Massimo Gatti in Rome's historic center. "Let's just hope we can resolve the problem, and above all save Italy."

Afghan woman, jailed for being raped, wins pardon (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? Afghanistan has pardoned a woman who was raped by a family member but then jailed for adultery, a statement from the presidential palace has said, in a case that highlights deep concerns about women's rights in the country.

The 21-year-old, known as Gulnaz, had earlier been offered release from prison if she married her attacker and eventually agreed to this condition, but her lawyer said the release granted this week did not depend on her going through with the wedding.

It was not clear whether she still intended to marry the man who raped her, her cousin's husband, who is serving a seven-year prison term for the crime, her lawyer Kimberley Motley added.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai's palace issued the statement pardoning Gulnaz late on Thursday, a rare pardon in such a case in staunchly conservative Muslim Afghanistan.

Her case attracted international attention after she took part in a documentary film commissioned by the European Union but later withheld.

Motley said she hoped her client would be released shortly, and that there was a place for her in a women's shelter.

The palace statement said Justice Minister Habibullah Ghalib asked a panel of top legal officials to order her release. Gulnaz sought a pardon from Karzai earlier this week.

"After assessing Gulnaz's case, (they) decided that her remaining sentence in jail should be pardoned under the current rules and regulations of the country and she should be released," the palace statement said.

Gulnaz was initially sentenced to two years in jail for "adultery by force", which was later increased to 12 years on appeal. She was given the choice of marriage or serving a jail sentence.

Her sentence was then cut to three years after a third appeal, and the requirement for her to marry was dropped.

Gulnaz became pregnant as a result of the attack and gave birth to a daughter in the Badam Bagh women's prison in Kabul almost a year ago.

Motley also welcomed what she said was a decision to review the cases of other women in the same jail.

"The judiciary has effectively supported the Elimination of Violence Against Women Act by allowing for her to be released, for allowing for her to be pardoned," Motley said.

"Precedent definitely has been set. As I understand it, the judiciary today was also reviewing the files of other women in Badam Bagh," she said.

The presidential palace declined to comment on whether other cases were under review.

FILM BLOCKED

The film in which Gulnaz featured, a documentary on women in prison, was blocked from release by the EU mission in Afghanistan over fears it might compromise the safety of the women involved because it showed their identity.

The film-makers have been pushing for the film to be released, and say Gulnaz wanted her story to be told.

"I made a promise to these women that I would get their stories out. I am glad that I've been able to honor that promise to Gulnaz," said the film's director Clementine Malpas.

"I still hope that our film can be released, so people can hear the stories of the other women, and perhaps increase their chance of getting justice as well."

EU spokeswoman Lynne O'Donnell welcomed news Gulnaz would be freed but declined to comment on whether the film would be released.

Gulnaz's case had been condemned widely by human rights groups. An online petition started by Motley has been signed by more than 6,000 people.

Motley said she is still trying to ascertain whether the attacker will also be released if they agree to marry.

(Reporting by Jan Harvey and Emma Graham-Harrison; Editing by Paul Tait)

(Corrects to stipulate that her release is not conditional on her marriage)

Billy Beane: There are rich teams, there are poor teams, then there's fifty feet of crap, and then there's us.Moneyball is a solid triple base hit. It isn't quite a home run, but has the right players and the right manager to get the job done. Lets start with the best player, Brad Pitt, who gives a terrific performance here, and is what makes the film so effective. I feel that I must batter-up Jonah Hill, who I thought did a super job transferring from Comedy to Drama and plays his role subtly and professionally. This had such a Social Network feel to it (especially since Fincher's Dragon Tattoo trailer was before it), since it was written by Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian. Learning about Billy Beane has never been more exciting, and director Bennett Miller makes the experience of Moneyball quite exhilarating.Moneyball is a true story, based on a novel with the same name by Michael Lewis, chronicling the life of Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics. At this point in Billy's life, his team is handicapped with the lowest salary in baseball. To get his team back on top and to the world series, he must find a competitive advantage for his team to win games. So instead of physically training and working with the players, Beane, along with his new assistant Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), they use statistical data to manage the players' value to guarantee wins, and change the game forever.First things first; Moneyball is not meant to be for fans of baseball, it may be a tad more beneficial to them, but this is a film for anyone who is at all interested in an inspirational sports film, with Brad Pitt. Moneyball looks fantastic. The cinematography is handled very diligently by Wally Pfister; who does quite a decent job putting the audience in the world of baseball, and all of the game scenes are lighted perfectly and with high intelligence. You can tell a lot of input was put into this, considering this film has been in post-production for quite awhile until it was finally released. In a film like this, it's important to keep your audience interested and eager for a second viewing; while it doesn't quite play well on that second reason, this is a very interesting story. Prior to going into this, I had no knowledge of who Billy Beane was or what he did for the game of baseball (which is generally the tactic I use when going into a film I'm excited about), and judging from the trailers, I thought he was an antagonist. Boy, was I incorrect to make that assumption. Beane is surprisingly a good guy, and it's time to bring up the man who was Beane, Brad Pitt.In my opinion, this is probably Pitt's most contained performance yet. It's not his best (see Fight Club or Benjamin Button), but it is quite impressive. What makes the atmosphere of his performance unique from all of his other roles is how low-key he played it. I don't know much about Billy Beane, but it seemed only fitting that Pitt would take on another tough role. Regardless, I still found it low-key and different from his usual bad-ass type roles, which was nice for a change, and I think might be in the running for [another] Academy Award. Aside from Pitt, I enjoyed the performances from Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman, who were both very effective in their roles.I wouldn't classify myself as an avid baseball lover or watcher (I'm a pretty big fan of the Chicago Cubs), but I am known from time to time to tune in to a game. For me, baseball is a bit uninteresting to watch all the way through (one of the many reasons why I was skeptical about seeing this), but I found myself fascinated all the way through Moneyball. It put a "twist" on the game, adding a little Social Network-statistic-type mumbo jumbo in. You also have to admire the chutzpah that screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) holds to keep tackling such complex subjects, and succeeding each time. The film was directed by Brett Ratner, who has directed some pretty big blockbuster hits such as the Rush Hour trilogy and X-Men: The Last Stand as well as the upcoming Tower Heist. Looking at those titles, it seems that Ratner can direct anything. He goes from buddy-cop to superheroes to baseball. Now do I think he is a good director? Yes, I do. Regardless of his few failed attempts of what's considered a "good" movie, I've always enjoyed his work, and Moneyball is definitely his most effective film in terms of drama and how it is shot. There was but one fatal flaw that kept me from giving this flick a perfect rating, and that is the replay value. I can't imagine myself viewing this multiple times, which is odd, because I've seen Fincher's The Social Network 20-30 times tops. Nevertheless, even for an individual viewing, Moneyball is worth seeing due to it's stellar performances, interesting plot, solid direction, and a magnificent script from Aaron Sorkin. Moneyball is not a home run, but it sure does swing for the fences.

Building For The Long Haul

aaron-levieAt a recent Startup School, Mark Zuckerberg made some very poignant comments about?Silicon Valley?s lack of long-term focus.? While the quick turnover of capital, people and innovation makes the Valley an incredibly attractive place for?starting?companies, it also produces an environment that?s almost hostile when it comes to building them for the long haul. The tension is remarkable, yet it?s rarely highlighted among the more explicit challenges ? say, going up against the 800lb gorilla ? faced by entrepreneurs. Every so often, my non-tech friends half-jokingly ask, ?Have you sold yet??? And for the first few years of Box?s existence, to placate them, I would ask for?just a couple more quarters. Right after we get our next product to market, after we double again, and so on.? But soon it dawned on me that I wasn?t going to stop.? I couldn?t.? There was just too much to do, too much unexplored territory. Even when things weren?t going well, the challenge of righting them was like another shot of pure adrenaline.

Ukraine gives Vatican a Christmas tree (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? The Vatican says Ukraine has donated a "majestic" Christmas tree to decorate St. Peter's Square.

The 30-meter (100-foot) high tree will be lit during a ceremony on Dec. 16 attended by prelates from both the Catholic and Orthodox churches in Ukraine. The Vatican says their presence will lend "ecumenical significance to the joy of the approaching Nativity."

Polish-born John Paul II started the tradition of erecting a tall Christmas tree in the square in 1982.

The Vatican's calendar of December ceremonies, released on Friday, says Pope Benedict XVI will preside over Christmas Eve Mass in St. Peter's Basilica on Dec. 24 and give traditional greetings from the basilica's balcony on Christmas Day.

U.S. to world: Dude, where's my vacation?

There?s good news and bad news on the American vacation front courtesy of a survey from Expedia.com.

Released on Wednesday, the Vacation Deprivation Study revealed that U.S. workers let two days of vacation go unused this year, down from three days last year.

Unfortunately, the drop wasn?t realized because people took more vacation days ? the average American worker took 12 days in both years ? but because they received, on average, 14 days of vacation this year vs. 15 in 2010.

?In terms of days they left on the table, as in ?It?s yours and you gave it away,? it went down,? said Joe Megibow, vice president and general manager. ?But we?d like to see the gap get closed by people using more of their vacation days rather than having employers give them less.?

Less, of course, is a relative term as the annual study once again showed Americans getting far fewer vacation days than their peers in most other developed countries. Surveying 7,800 employed adults in 20 countries, the study (as usual) showed that workers in Europe get far more time off ? 25 to 30 days per year ? and tend to use almost all of it.

?In Europe, vacations are considered a way of life not a luxury,? said Megibow. ?Even in countries where respondents reported less financial strength, they still go on vacation.?

Conversely, almost half of U.S. respondents reported their financial situation as ?solid? or ?good,? which according to Megibow, suggests a very different point of view: ?In the U.S., people view vacations as a luxury,? he told msnbc.com. ?Even though Americans report slightly stronger financial health, vacations are still one of the things that gets cut.?

Part of the problem may be that such feelings are being tempered by past events. ?People are still focusing on the bad news and not taking in good news like retailers doing well,? said Alden Cass, a performance coach and CEO of Competitive Streak Consulting Inc. ?They?re almost having a PTSD-like reaction to things that are out of their control.?

Far better, suggests Cass, is to just let go. ?People need to get away to reduce the amount of anxiety in their lives, to disengage from their BlackBerrys and iPhones and to not worry about the things they do on a daily basis,? he told msnbc.com. ?Sometimes lying on a Caribbean beach where there?s no Internet access is the best recipe for coming back with a clear head, an objective mindset and a better attitude.?

On the subject of disengaging, at least, Americans seem to be getting the message. When survey participants were asked how often they checked e-mail or voicemail while on vacation, 41 percent said never, 34 percent said sometimes, 20 percent said regularly and just 4 percent said constantly.

?Americans don?t get a lot of vacation,? said Megibow, ?but on the few days they take, most are checking out [from work], which is great.?

Eating fish reduces risk of Alzheimer's disease, study finds

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2011) ? People who eat baked or broiled fish on a weekly basis may be improving their brain health and reducing their risk of developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease, according to a study presented November 30 at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

"This is the first study to establish a direct relationship between fish consumption, brain structure and Alzheimer's risk," said Cyrus Raji, M.D., Ph.D., from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. "The results showed that people who consumed baked or broiled fish at least one time per week had better preservation of gray matter volume on MRI in brain areas at risk for Alzheimer's disease."

Alzheimer's disease is an incurable, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and cognitive skills. According to the National Institute on Aging, as many as 5.1 million Americans may have Alzheimer's disease. In MCI, memory loss is present but to a lesser extent than in Alzheimer's disease. People with MCI often go on to develop Alzheimer's disease.

For the study, 260 cognitively normal individuals were selected from the Cardiovascular Health Study. Information on fish consumption was gathered using the National Cancer Institute Food Frequency Questionnaire. There were 163 patients who consumed fish on a weekly basis, and the majority ate fish one to four times per week. Each patient underwent 3-D volumetric MRI of the brain. Voxel-based morphometry, a brain mapping technique that measures gray matter volume, was used to model the relationship between weekly fish consumption at baseline and brain structure 10 years later. The data were then analyzed to determine if gray matter volume preservation associated with fish consumption reduced risk for Alzheimer's disease. The study controlled for age, gender, education, race, obesity, physical activity, and the presence or absence of apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE4), a gene that increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's.

Gray matter volume is crucial to brain health. When it remains higher, brain health is being maintained. Decreases in gray matter volume indicate that brain cells are shrinking.

The findings showed that consumption of baked or broiled fish on a weekly basis was positively associated with gray matter volumes in several areas of the brain. Greater hippocampal, posterior cingulate and orbital frontal cortex volumes in relation to fish consumption reduced the risk for five-year decline to MCI or Alzheimer's by almost five-fold.

"Consuming baked or broiled fish promotes stronger neurons in the brain's gray matter by making them larger and healthier," Dr. Raji said. "This simple lifestyle choice increases the brain's resistance to Alzheimer's disease and lowers risk for the disorder."

The results also demonstrated increased levels of cognition in people who ate baked or broiled fish.

"Working memory, which allows people to focus on tasks and commit information to short-term memory, is one of the most important cognitive domains," Dr. Raji said. "Working memory is destroyed by Alzheimer's disease. We found higher levels of working memory in people who ate baked or broiled fish on a weekly basis, even when accounting for other factors, such as education, age, gender and physical activity."

Eating fried fish, on the other hand, was not shown to increase brain volume or protect against cognitive decline.
