Feminists face Twitter abuse after Jane Austen honour

U.K. journalist and New Statesman editor?Laurie Penny joins guest host Terry O'Reilly to discuss the backlash against Caroline Criado-Perez, who?recently championed the campaign to get Jane Austen on the ?10 note. ?

Alongside a wave of congratulations, Criado-Perez was also met with an onslaught of rape and death threats on Twitter -- up to 50 an hour at the height of the backlash.

Most of the tweets sent to her are too graphic to re-post here, but this tweet, for example, offers a glimpse:

Penny, who has also been threatened on Twitter, discusses what it's like to be on the receiving end of these kinds of threats, as well as the responsibility that social media sites like Twitter have to combat online abuse.?

"There have been misogynistic attacks on women for as long as the internet has been around," said Penny, who doesn't believe that censorship is the solution. ?

Have you ever experienced this kind of harassment online? What do you think should be done about it? Is the onus on Twitter to crack down on threats or is there another solution??

India releases 22 Pakistanis

Amritsar, July 30 (IANS) At least 22 Pakistani nationals, including 19 fishermen, were released Tuesday by Indian authorities and allowed to go home from the Attari-Wagah border.

The Pakistani fishermen had been arrested for crossing into India?s territorial waters. They were lodged in various jails.

The Pakistanis were handed over by the Border Security Force (BSF) and immigration authorities to their Pakistani counterparts after completing formalities at Attari, 30 km from here.

India and Pakistan regularly release prisoners, mostly fishermen and those who have crossed the land border inadvertently, as a goodwill gesture.

(AP) ? Silvio Berlusconi's political fate is in the hands of Italy's highest court, which is preparing to hear arguments in the former premier's fraud conviction.

Berlusconi has been convicted of tax fraud in a complex TV rights transaction for his Mediaset network, and sentenced to four-years in prison with a five-year ban on public office. This is his final appeal.

The Court of Cassation on Tuesday hears arguments in the case and is expected to issue a decision later in the day or Wednesday.

Berlusconi has no official role in Italy's uneasy coalition government, but remains influential and was key to the center-right's close second-place finish in February elections. He has a seat in Italy's Senate, which he would have to vacate if the lower courts' verdicts are confirmed.

Apple and Google's Motorola drop 14 patents from litigation in the Southern District of Florida

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: www.fosspatents.com --- Monday, July 29, 2013
In connection with the patent dispute between Apple and Motorola Mobility, the Google subsidiary's assertions of FRAND-pledged standard-essential patents (SEPs) have recently received most of the attention ( allegation that Motorola demanded more than 12 times the royalty from Apple that it charged others , finalization of FTC-Google consent decree , upcoming Federal Circuit hearing on the "Posner appeal" ). But Motorola is also asserting some non-SEPs against Apple (and, of course, all of Apple's assertions against Motorola relate to non-SEPs), such as the infamous, clinically-dead push notification patent is is still enforcing against Apple in Germany . In the United States, a Motorola ITC complaint against Apple involving SEPs and non-SEPs was dismissed (and is being appealed ). And between 2010 and 2012 Motorola asserted a dozen non-SEPs against Apple in the Southern District of Florida, where Apple countersued over the same number of patents. The 24-patent Miami litigation is currently scheduled to go to trial in August 2014 . Judge Robert N. Scola, the federal judge presiding over this case, was thoroughly disappointed that the parties couldn't agree on how to narrow their case without asking the court to provide a large number of claim constructions as guidance to aid that process. As a result, he pushed back the case by four months, which is more of a problem for Google (which still has nothing to show in U.S. litigation ...

Fracking Could Help Geothermal Become a Power Player

Why isn't there more use of geothermal energy for power plants?

HOT ROCKS: Geothermal power is abundant, renewable and clean. So why isn't it employed more often? Image: Photograph by Julie Donnelly-Nolan, USGS

Here's another use for fracking: expanding access to hot rocks deep beneath Earth?s surface for energy production. In April Ormat Technologies hooked up the first such project?known in the lingo as an enhanced geothermal system, or EGS?to the nation's electric grid near Reno, Nev.

"The big prize is EGS," enthuses Douglas Hollett, director of the Geothermal Technologies Office at the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE). "The key is learning how to do it in a reliable way, in a responsible way."

By some estimates, the U.S. could tap as much as 2,000 times the nation?s current annual energy use of roughly 100 exajoules (an exajoule equals a quintillion, or 1018 joules) via enhanced geothermal technologies. With respect to electricity, the DoE concludes at least 500 gigawatts of electric capacity could be harvested from such EGS systems. Even better, hot rocks underlie every part of the country and the rest of the world. Australia's first enhanced geothermal system, spicily named Habanero, began producing power in May, and Europe has brought three such power plants online.

The idea is simple: pump water or other fluids down to the hot rocks beneath the surface. Heat from the rocks turns the water to steam. The steam rises and turns a turbine that spins a magnet to make electricity.

The technology is proved. For years people have turned naturally produced steam from hot springs and the like into electricity. A geothermal power plant in Larderello, Italy, has churned out electricity this way in Tuscany for more than a century, and big power plants can be built this way. The Geysers in California can produce 850 megawatts of electricity alone. But that's because the geothermal resource is close to the surface and obvious, thanks to hot steam rising into the sky.

Although similar natural bounty has turned Iceland into a geothermal powerhouse, there are only so many such sites around. That's where fracking, the controversial practice of pumping fluid underground to shatter shale and release oil or gas, can help. Fracking ?enhances? geothermal by making cracks in hot rocks where none existed, allowing heat to be harvested from Earth?s interior practically anywhere, although this reduces the total power produced because of the need to pump water through the system.

As an added benefit, however: geothermal power can run constantly?the hot rocks don't cool very fast?which makes it renewable and predictable. "Geothermal is homegrown, reliable and clean," says Rohit Khanna, program manager at the World Bank for its Energy Sector Management Assistance Program. That is a big part of the reason it is being pursued in developing countries such as Chile, Indonesia, Kenya and the Philippines.

In the case of the Philippines geothermal power now produces nearly 2,000 megawatts, or nearly 20 percent of the country's electricity, thanks to investments that were made in the 1990s. And Kenya, according to its ambassador to the U.S., Elkanah Odembo, would like to derive more than half its electricity from geothermal by 2030. The goal: a combination of geothermal and hydroelectric power that will make them entirely renewably powered. "The potential is there," Odembo promises. He says the Rift Valley contains an estimated 15 gigawatts of potential geothermal power. Nairobi has already become a boomtown for such development.

Advanced Epic Fantasy - Calisma Rebirth

Hello all!

I had the extreme pleasure of creating a largely successful, long-term roleplay in the epic fantasy genre. It was an absolute pleasure to watch the characters grow and interact through a guided storyline. It was with a heavy heart that I had to close the roleplay due to time restraints. Even after the Completion of the roleplay, which was abrupt, character sheets have continued to pour in and requests have continued to be posted for a reopening of this universe. Now, I think, is the time to rebirth Calisma.

While the storyline will change course, it will continue on from the previous content. Don't worry, I made it a habit to summarize as we progressed. There is quite a bit of lore and history to read through, so if you get distracted after a paragraph or two this would not be something you'd enjoy.

This is an interest check to see if I can gather enough support to re-establish a roleplay. I'm seeking skilled, dedicated and creative writers to join me on an adventure of epic proportions. Please send me a message, or post below, if you're interested.

Thanks for your time!

Poll: NYC Democrats believe Weiner should drop mayoral bid

A majority of New York City Democrats say they believe Anthony Weiner should drop his bid for mayor in the aftermath of a sexting scandal that has overtaken his campaign.

A Quinnipiac University poll released Monday found that 53 percent of likely Democratic voters think Weiner should exit the race, while 40 percent say he should stay in.

The survey, conducted after last Tuesday, when Weiner admitted he had continued to send sexual messages to women he met online even after he left Congress, found the ex-lawmaker had fallen to fourth place in the Democratic race for mayor ? just weeks after he was the poll?s front-runner.

According to the new survey, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn leads among likely Democratic voters with 27 percent support. She's followed by Public Advocate Bill de Blasio at 21 percent, former Comptroller Bill Thompson at 20 percent and Weiner at 16 percent.

Comptroller John Liu has 6 percent in the poll, while former City Council member Sal Albanese registered at just 2 percent.

Seven percent of voters remain undecided ahead of the Sept. 10 primary. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.6 percentage points.

Weiner has repeatedly insisted he will not drop out of the race, but virtually every campaign event he?s held over the last week has been overshadowed by the sexting controversy.

According to the poll, a similar percentage of female and male voters say Weiner needs to quit the race ? 54 percent of women say he should go, compared with 52 percent of men.

But there is a significant racial gap. According to Quinnipiac, 53 percent of black voters say Weiner should stay in the race, compared to 64 percent of white voters who think he should quit.

But the poll suggests that none of Weiner?s rivals would see a major boost if he were to end his campaign. Quinn?s standing would increase to 30 percent, compared with 25 percent each for Thompson and de Blasio. The winning candidate has to reach 40 percent support in the Sept. 10 primary to avoid an Oct. 1 runoff election.

Football: Charlton expects Rooney to stay at United

HONG KONG: Manchester United legend Bobby Charlton expects striker Wayne Rooney to stay at the club and hopes he will go on to beat his goal-scoring record.

Rooney's future at Old Trafford has been in doubt since the end of last season when now-retired manager Alex Ferguson said the England forward had asked for a transfer.

Rooney denies that but is said to be "angry and confused" and has been the subject of a big-money bid from Chelsea. United say they do not want to sell the 27-year-old.

Charlton, now a United director, told Sky Sports in Hong Kong, where the club are on tour: "Wayne Rooney is a Manchester United player and I think that he will continue to be a Manchester United player.

"I don't like losing really, really good players and he is a really great player.

"I was hoping one day that he might score as many goals as I had and that would have been really nice if it was at our club - and I'm still thinking that way."

Injury has kept Rooney out of United's pre-season tour of Asia and Australia, but United manager David Moyes on Sunday said the forward was on track to return for a friendly in Sweden on August 6.

Rooney's tally of 197 goals is 52 short of Charlton's club record.

NFC Ring Kickstarter project nears goal for Windows Phone app; are you in?

Kickstarter projects are certainly all the rage in 2013 and increasingly we?re seeing Windows Phone being considered in the funding and development stages of some of these ventures. Case in point, the NFC Ring (nfcring.com). We?re big advocates of wearable technology and believe it?s the next big thing to take off in the next few years, so the NFC Ring makes sense to us.

The ring itself is designed to ?unlock doors, mobile phones, transfer information and link people? and since it is NFC, it?s merely an elegant looking ring with no wires, battery or fuss. The ring has two NFC inlays, public and private, allowing you to divvy up what is shared. For instance, you could pick up an NFC door unlock tool and use that for one side and on the other, share your contact information just by tapping someone?s phone (if you have ever used an NFC business card, you?ll know how awesome this can be).

Anyway, the project has reached the main funding goal of ?30,000, hitting ?106,133 as of today. But what?s real interesting is that the designers have other plans should the keep hitting various funding levels. What happens when they hit ?110,000? They?ll commit to a ?Windows Mobile (sic) App?.

The project looks quite achievable and we like their plan that they?ve laid out for execution. What does it cost to jump on board? For ?22 (around $38) you get the ring and the app. You can of course also pledge higher, should you choose.

Look, we?re not here to tell you how to spend your money and there are dozens if not hundreds of worthy Kickstarter projects out there. But we threw down some cash for this mission and with less than ?4,000 to go to hit a Windows Phone app (in 21 days), we?re leaving this up to you guys.

Make sure you check out the video demo above of the NFC Ring and let us know below if you?ve committed!

Election turnout high in Mali on the heels of war and French-led intervention

Final results may be known as early as tomorrow, as Malians shrug off a coup and chaos and vote with new 'biometric' cards.

By Peter Tinti,?Correspondent / July 29, 2013

A man casts his vote for president at a polling station in Kidal, Mali, Sunday, July 28. This desert town and the surrounding region house just 0.5 percent of the people who registered to vote in Mali's presidential election, a number likely to have little impact on the race's outcome.

Ballot counting is now under way after voters in the West African country turned out in unusually large numbers?yesterday, with an outcome expected as early as tomorrow.

These presidential elections come?16 months after a military coup in Mali and six months after a French-led military intervention to liberate the desert north from rebel groups linked to Al Qaeda.

Yesterday?s vote is seen as a critical first step for a poor, landlocked country once wrongly considered a model of democracy. And the vote came amid concerns by local officials and several prominent international NGOs that hastily planned elections might further destabilize an already divided nation.

Others warned elections might put civilians at risk of attack from armed rebel groups in the north.

In the neighborhood of Lafiabougou, in the capital Bamako, lines had formed before polls had opened.

At a separate polling station across town in Hippodrome, a steady stream of voters arrived late into the evening.

APEM, a network of 2,100 Malian election observers, said that 96 percent of polling stations had opened on time and that turnout was ?high.? Polls closed without reports of any major incidents.

?The process has not been easy, but I think that here today you see that the Malians, the majority, are eager to vote,? says Pierre Buyoya, a former president of Burundi and the current African Union High Representative for Mali and head of the African?led International Support Mission in Mali.

?You see that they came very early in a great number,? Mr. Buyoya adds, ?and I think that the turnout is going to be high, surely more than usual.?

In school courtyards and government buildings across the country, electoral officials guided voters through a multi-step voting process, which featured the use of biometric voting cards, known by their local acronym, NINA, for the first time in the country?s history.

The 6.8 million NINA cards arrived in June and despite initial delays in their distribution, officials insisted that at least 85 percent of the cards had reached the correct Malian citizen.

Despite the rushed implementation of a new voting system in a country where turnout for a presidential election has never exceeded 40 percent, most Malians expressed confidence in the legitimacy of the vote.

?I have my NINA card and so does my family,? says Kata Data Alhousseini Maiga, a teacher and community activist in the northern city of Gao, ?the process was easy.?

Until recently, Mr. Maiga was against holding polls so soon after the war, but recent developments and a trip to Bamako has changed his opinion.

?I think considering the situation, these elections are better than past elections,? says Maiga, who has run as a candidate for local office in the past. ?For the next elections, when there is more time to prepare, there will be time for a real campaign, so it will be even better."

Maiga, who resided in Gao throughout the rebel occupation, described security as his primary concern. ?You need an elected president to address the problems that we are facing,? he says, ?otherwise things will just continue like this.?

Sunday?s polls capped a condensed but vibrant campaign season that saw several candidates touring the nation to packed venues. Political rallies in Bamako the capital featured songs commissioned from local hip-hop artists. Women donned colorful wax-print fabric outfits featuring the faces of candidates. Large billboards and campaign posters dotted the city.?

During mid-day rush hour, campaign slogans blasted in the streets via ubiquitous green ?sotramas? or hollowed out vans, the most popular choice of transport for the city masses.

Of the 27 candidates running for office, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, known locally by his initials, IBK, is considered to be the front-runner.

Mr. Keita served as the country?s prime minister for much of the 1990s and has run for president unsuccessfully in two previous elections.

His chief opponent, Soumaila Ciss?, served as Mali?s finance minister and once headed the West African Monetary Union. Like Mr. Keita, Mr. Ciss? has previously run for president.

In Mali, similar to the French system, unless a candidate garners more than 50 percent outright, a run-off second round will follow, in this case on?Aug. 11.

Analysts widely anticipated a second round, though initial numbers trickling into Bamako suggest that Keita may pass the 50 percent mark.

Reports out of northern Mali, where state authorities have only just returned, and security concerns linger, suggest that voter turnout was higher than expected and took place without major incident.

However, in the northern region of Kidal, where the government enjoys a tenuous truce with ethnic Tuareg rebels who control certain towns, some polling stations did not receive a single voter.

'Surveillance society': German writers slam Berlin's NSA spying ...

Protesters wearing masks of U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden hold a sign disparaging the National Security Agency (NSA) outside the "Dagger Complex", which is used by the U.S. Army intelligence services, during a demonstration against the NSA and in support of Snowden in Griesheim, 20km (12.4 miles) south of Frankfurt, July 20, 2013. Protesters wearing masks of U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden hold a sign disparaging the National Security Agency (NSA) outside the ?Dagger Complex?, which is used by the U.S. Army intelligence services, during a demonstration against the NSA and in support of Snowden in Griesheim, 20km (12.4 miles) south of Frankfurt, July 20, 2013. (Reuters/Kai Pfaffenbach)

German writers have published an open letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel, demanding explanations over the country?s secret services? involvement in the NSA?s spying program. The letter-cum-online petition has already gathered more than 5,000 signatures.

?How come the BND [Germany's foreign intelligence service] and Verfassungsschutz [German domestic intelligence] use the NSA-program ?XKeyScore? for surveillance, even though there is no legal basis for it? Is the government going to bypass the rule of law, instead of defending it?? reads the letter published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung daily and signed by 48 writers.

And the letter has grown into something bigger that an outcry from Germany?s cultural elite, as more than 5,000 people put their signatures below the text, after it was transformed into an online petition by one of its authors, writer Juli Zeh.

The appeal to Chancellor Merkel reminds her of her own words ? ?Germany is not a surveillance state? ? which she uttered at the July 20 press conference. The writers go on to say that wasn?t true.

?We witness a historic attack on our constitutional democracy, the reversal from presumption of innocence to general suspicion,? says the letter, demanding answers from Angela Merkel, who said she never knew anything about PRISM until the media leaked Snowden?s revelations.

That stance has however been shattered by Der Spiegel magazine, which exposed that German secret services had a role to play in the NSA spying process.

While Merkel has been cautious in commenting on the issue, even justifying the NSA methods Germany?s President Joachim Gauck spoke out in defense of Snowden.

?This will normally only be put right if information is made public. Whoever draws the public?s attention to it and acts out of conscience deserves respect,? he told Passauer Neue Presse newspaper, as cited by Reuters.

German President Joachim Gauck (AFP Photo)
German President Joachim Gauck (AFP Photo)

Although the German president does not possess political power ? that rests in the hands of the chancellor ? Gauck?s voice matters as he is a highly popular and respected politician with a record in defending civil rights.

An East German dissident during the time when the country was divided, Gauck worked on exposing Stasi, the secret police, which conducted massive surveillance.

?The fear that our telephones or mails are recorded and stored by foreign intelligence services is a constraint on the feeling of freedom and then the danger grows that freedom itself is damaged,? Gauck said, referring to the NSA program.

The government feels it has to somehow respond to the avalanche of criticism over its role in helping the US-led spying. Two of Germany?s most senior cabinet members have come up with the initiative to push the UN to change their current privacy legislation, which has remained intact since 1966, when there was nothing like mobile phones or the internet.

The initiative is seen by many as an attempt to reduce the damage done by Snowden?s revelation to the reputation of the German government ahead of September election. Whatever the politicians motives are, though, they appear to be moving in the right direction, according to the Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Dr. Alexander Dix.

?Data Protection Commissioners all over the world have for long time called for an international treaty to have privacy regulations in place to protect individual privacy and data when surfing the internet and crossing borders. And now the NSA scandal is just the last tip to make it completely clear that we need an international agreement in this sphere. What we are seeing here is really excessive secrecy protecting excessive surveillance and that cannot go on as it has done in the past. We need effective control and we need limits to what the intelligence services are allowed to do,? he told RT.

Co-founder of Russia's biggest search engine dies

MOSCOW (AP) ? Ilya Segalovich, the co-founder of Russia's largest search engine, Yandex, has died, the company said Sunday. He was 48.

Segalovich died Saturday at a London hospital, Yandex director general and fellow founder Arkady Volozh said.

Volozh said in the company's blog that Segalovich was diagnosed with stomach cancer last year. He responded positively to chemical therapy, but then developed a brain cancer that caused his death.

On Thursday, Yandex announced Segalovich had died but then corrected itself within hours, saying he was on life support with no brain function. Volozh said doctors removed the life support after it became clear Segalovich couldn't be saved.

"The only hope we had was a diagnosis error," Volozh said. "We couldn't make a miracle. We only could offer a chance for it to happen."

Segalovich's body will be brought home Wednesday, Volozh said. Funeral plans have yet to be announced.

Segalovich founded Yandex in 1997 with Volozh, his school friend. The company has been a Russian success story, with a share of 62 percent of the search engine market in Russia compared with Google's 25.6 percent.

Segalovich invented the engine's name, derived from Yet Another Index, and served as its chief technological officer.

The latest clues were found in photos from NASA's powerful Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter circling the planet. The images show what appears to be an ancient river delta, which may have emptied into a?vast Martian ocean?that inundated up to one-third of the Red Planet long ago, a new study reports.

"Scientists have long hypothesized that the northern lowlands of Mars are a dried-up ocean bottom, but no?one yet has found?the smoking gun," study co-author Mike Lamb, an assistant professor of geology at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, said in a statement. [Photos: The Search for Water on Mars]

The new study does not provide the long-sought smoking gun, researchers stressed, but it further bolsters the hypothesis.

The team studied high-resolution images of a slice of the northern lowlands snapped by the HiRise camera aboard NASA's?Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which can distinguish features as small as?10 inches?(25 centimeters)?on the Red Planet's surface.

Specifically, the scientists looked at a 39-square-mile?(100 square kilometers)?area that's part of a larger region called Aeolis Dorsa, which lies about?620 miles?[? greatest diameter of the dwarf planet, Ceres]?(1,000 km)?from Gale Crater. (NASA's?Curiosity rover?touched down inside Gale Crater last August, kicking off a planned two-year surface mission to assess Mars' past and present potential to host microbial life.)

The small section of Aeolis Dorsa features many ridges called inverted channels, which form in river bottoms over time when coarse material, such as gravel, is deposited by flowing water. Inverted channels can linger long after the rivers that created them have evaporated, helping researchers trace the past activity of liquid?water on Mars.

HiRise images allowed the study team to do just that in the section of Aeolis Dorsa they examined. They found that the inverted channels spread out markedly and slope steeply downward near their end, just as streams here on Earth do when they approach and empty into the sea.

Top Tips For Your Internet Marketing Plan - Best Home Business ...

Website marketing is a key tool in developing an approach that allows for the success of people. This article will provide you become a success through Online marketing. You will be well on your way to becoming a successful Affiliate marketing.

Create an easy to use ?Link to Us? clickable button for your site to encourage your visitors to link back to your website.People who share your interests will be happy to link to you, this will guarantee that your link will be visible to them.

Take into consideration the different methods available for advertising your website. You can use social networking, blog posts and even posters in area businesses to help advertise your site for little or no cost. There are quite a few ways to drive traffic to your website. The most important thing here is that you?re attempting to be creative and unique.

TIP! Your website?s tag provides a perfect opportunity to establish and shape your identity. Tags at the top of each page play a large role in the search engine formula, and are visible to your visitors, too.

If you post in a forum, you can usually link to your site right in your signature, if you put it into your signature box. This is a non-aggressive way to promote your business without actively having to ?talk it up? to others.

Consider which methods you want to promote your website. You can use social networking, list your business in online directories or share your content on social networks. There are endless ways to get visitors to check out your site. Creativity helps when trying to gain customers.

The key to successful Internet marketing is to recognize a problem in which you should fix. When you start your business, create a list of questions that need answering.

You should always use email marketing as an advertising strategy. Create interesting newsletters that not only inform your customers, but intrigue them. When your customer receives an email, you want them to absorb the information and feel as if they received interesting content, not spam. Using newsletters to maintain long term contact with customers demonstrates that you value their return business.

TIP! Your website should be comprehensive and should focus on creating quality content. You will want to impart informative knowledge, quickly, to your customers so they can make an educated buying decision.

This measure will help them to feel more informed about the purchase they are thinking about. This tells them that you are just supplying information; the choice of whether to buy or pass.

A good web marketing tip is to be aware of your competitors are doing. You may easily check out your competitor?s web site and see what features they have. You might also be able to find out what their traffic is like and compare them to your own site is doing.

Don?t overlook direct marketing in conjunction with your Internet marketing. Let your customers know about promotions and special services through phone, fax and/or email. A lot of the data you need can be acquired through the yellow pages or through online phone directories.

TIP! If your business website is always looking the same, you may want to start a blog. Search engine spiders are more likely to index websites that have new content that is relevant to the website.

If you do not change your site often, it could be a great idea to start blogging. Search engines rank sites with fresh content more highly, and if your site does not have it, your ranking will suffer. A blog allows you to create fresh content.

Make good use of social media to grow your customer base. Twitter is one of the best ways today to enjoy instant back and forth communication with your audience.

Make sure the design of your site is organized neatly and is simple to navigate. This will keep your website have an easier time finding what they?re looking for.

Knowing what your competition is up to is a necessity if you want to stay ahead of them. Look at websites of other businesses in your chosen field, and see what can be improved. Capitalizing on the weakness of your competition by promoting your own ability compared to the lack of theirs will help distinguish you in the eyes of would be customers.

TIP! If you are promoting your small business through internet marketing, make sure to pay close attention to the type of information you are providing consumers. When you have unique content and make it have some value to your customers, it is sure to be appreciated.

Make sure you do not spend too much on advertising. You should avoid paying more for something that isn?t helping your business. If you do have to spend a lot of money, it is important that it is worth your money to do so.

A great way to enhance the content of your customers and advance your marketing strategy is to interview authorities within your niche. You can jot down notes during the interview or do it as an audio or video.

There are online communities, blogs, local courses, and even free e-books dealing with this subject.

Be active on the major social media networks to increase your customer base. Facebook fan pages will allow your customers the chance to post feedback others will see, this will get your name out there. Twitter allows you to engage on an informal basis with your customers.

TIP! Encouraging your customer to get emotionally invested in your product/service can be a powerful Internet marketing tactic. Encourage your audience to picture how much their life would benefit by purchasing your product.

You should make a point to note this on your site so your customers feel they are contributing. You don?t have to donate a huge portion of your profits in order for this gesture to impress your audience.

You must use a well-built website on the Internet to increase the visibility of your business. When traditional advertising doesn?t give the needed exposure to your product, marketing on the Internet is a life saver. La. flood board sues oil companies over erosion

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The oil and gas industry has cost Louisiana hundreds of thousands acres of coastal land that serve as a natural buffer against flooding from hurricanes, officials in charge of New Orleans-area flood protection say in a lawsuit seeking to hold dozens of companies responsible.

Corrosive saltwater from a network of oil and gas access and pipeline canals has killed vegetation and swept away mountains of soil, the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East's board of commissioners claims in the lawsuit, which it filed Wednesday in Orleans Parish Civil District Court. The wetlands are considered a crucial buffer against hurricanes because they can help keep floodwaters from storm surge at bay.

"What remains of these coastal lands is so seriously diseased that if nothing is done, it will slip into the Gulf of Mexico by the end of this century, if not sooner," the lawsuit says.

The board says it will have to bear many of the costs associated with the need for increased flood protection. The lawsuit, a draft of which was provided to The Associated Press before it was filed, seeks unspecified damages.

"Even the industry recognizes they are responsible for some of the land lost, and it's not an insignificant amount," said board vice president John Barry, author of "Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America."

About 100 companies are named as defendants in the lawsuit, including Apache Corp., BP America Production Co., Chevron USA Inc., ConocoPhillips Co., Exxon Mobil Corp., Shell Oil Co. and The Pickens Co. Inc.

Officials in the oil and gas industry said they will vigorously defend against the lawsuit.

A statement from Chris John, president of the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association, said the industry has been involved in trying to fight coastal erosion, a phenomenon he said involves "both natural changes and many man-made activities."

John said the industry would vigorously defend itself against the lawsuit, calling it "a contingency lawsuit where the plaintiff attorneys stand to gain millions of dollars."

The board covers most of the New Orleans area, governing the Orleans Levee District, the Lake Borgne Basin Levee District and the East Jefferson Levee District.

"I think this is the first time that an entity like the authority has brought a suit like this," said Gladstone Jones, an attorney representing the board.

A protective buffer that took 6,000 years to form "has been brought to the brink of destruction over the course of a single human lifetime," the draft of the suit alleges.

"Unless immediate action is taken to reverse these losses and restore the region's natural defense, many of Louisiana's coastal communities will vanish into the sea," it says. "Meanwhile, inland cities and towns that once were well insulated from the sea will be left to face the ever-rising tide at their doorsteps."

The suit says the U.S. Geological Survey has determined that "altered hydrology" associated with oil and gas activities is one of the primary causes of coastal land loss.

"The increased storm surge risk resulting from the extensive and continuing land loss in southeast Louisiana ... has required, and will continue to require, increased flood protection at increasingly high cost," the suit says.

Local levee districts will bear increasing responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the multibillion-dollar system of gates, walls and armored levees that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has built following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, according to the suit.

"The reality is that despite the new system, New Orleans is going to be increasingly vulnerable as the coast continues to erode," Barry said. "You cannot build levees high enough to protect against the storms that are coming."

Oil below $107 as China manufacturing weakens

BANGKOK (AP) Weak China manufacturing dragged the price of oil below $107 a barrel Wednesday as traders awaited the latest figures on U.S. crude and gasoline supplies.

Benchmark crude for September delivery was down 33 cents at $106.90 a barrel at early afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 29 cents to settle Tuesday at $107.23.

A HSBC survey released Wednesday showed China's manufacturing at an 11-month low this month, a disappointing performance that puts pressure on Chinese leaders to reverse a deepening slowdown in the world's second-largest economy.

The U.S. government's weekly report on America's inventories of crude due later Wednesday is expected to show another drop in supplies. Falling supplies have helped propel the price of oil to a 16-month high this month, boosting gasoline prices as well.

A survey by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., shows analysts expect a decline in crude oil inventories of 2.6 million barrels for the week ended July 19. That would bring the four-week drop to nearly 30 million barrels.

Brent crude, traded on the ICE Futures exchange in London, fell 17 cents to $108.25 a barrel.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

Wholesale gasoline added 1.3 cents to $3.042 a gallon.

Heating oil was steady at $3.072 a gallon.

Natural gas fell 0.6 cent to $3.737 per 1,000 cubic feet.

New electric BMW car "agile and engaging to drive"

bmw

epa03699876 (HANDNOUT) A handout provided by BMW dated November 2012 made available on 14 May 2013 shows a BMW i3 Coupe concert car in Munich, Germ...

Steffen Jahn/BMW / EPA

May 2013 photo shows an i3 Coupe in Munich, Germany. BMW's first electric car is expected to be in U.S. showrooms in about one year.

Although it?s still a year from reaching U.S. showrooms, BMW has set a price of $42,275 for the new i3 electric vehicle that will serve as the launch platform for its all-new battery-car brand-within-a-brand, BMW i.

The little battery-electric vehicle will primarily target urban commuters who are nonetheless looking for more than just basic transportation. The BMW i3 will not only offer more up-market attributes but also will be notable as the auto industry?s first mass-produced vehicle to make extensive use of super-light carbon fiber.

?The BMW i3 heralds the dawn of a new era for individual mobility and for the BMW Group,? said Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management, Sales and Marketing BMW. ?True to a genuine BMW, the BMW i3 has strong emotional appeal, outstanding product substance and a guarantee of sheer driving pleasure. With this leading-edge vehicle and attractive price, we will provide customers with a compelling offer for electro-mobility.?

(See also: Increasing Fuel Efficiency Could Lead Global Oil Price Collapse)

An official unveiling of the production i3 set for next Monday, underscores the global reach BMW expects for the new i3 battery-car, with simultaneous events scheduled in New York City, London and Beijing. The electric city car will reach U.S. showrooms during the second quarter of 2014.

The BMW i3 will offer interior space, the maker promises, similar to that of a more conventional 3-Series model, albeit on a shorter overall body with a turning circle of just 32.3 feet ? something that could prove appealing to urban dwellers, especially those in older European or Asian cities.

The German automaker promises, in a statement, that the new battery-car will be ?agile and engaging to drive, yet ideally suited to driving in dense urban areas.?

(See also: Chevy's Familiar Bowtie Badge Turns 100)

The BMW i3 will be powered by a 170-horsepower, 184 lb-ft hybrid-synchronous electric motor developed by BMW. It will draw power from a 22 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. And though final EPA testing has not been completed, the maker expects the city car will yield between 80 and 100 miles per charge.

BMW has not revealed charging times using a Level 2 charger, though a completely drained battery would likely require something between 5 to 7 hours using 220 volts depending upon the hardware built into the vehicle, TheDetroitBureau.com estimates. The carmaker did note that a Level 3, 480-volt quick charger will provide an 80 percent recharge in 20 minutes.

BMW is the latest among a growing list of manufacturers to reveal plans for entering the electric vehicle market. The German maker?s move is significant in several ways, however:

??????? Like the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S, the BMW i3 will be one of the few battery cars to adopt a completely unique platform and body optimized for electric propulsion;

??????? BMW plans to launch an entirely new battery-based sub-brand, BMW i, and will follow the i3 model with a sportier plug-in hybrid, the BMW i8;

??????? The i3 will adopt a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, or CFRP passenger cell mounted on an aluminum chassis.

(See also: First Drive: VW's 261 MPG XL1)

Many in the auto industry see super-light carbon fiber as the material of the future. The challenge is bringing down costs that have, until now, largely limited CFRP?s use to Formula One race cars and super-exotic sports cars. The Bavarian maker is pushing to bring down production costs and has set up new CFRP manufacturing facilities in both Moses Lake, Washington and Leipzig, Germany.

The final price of $42,275 will be offset by a $7,500 U.S. government tax credit. Buyers also will be eligible for various state incentives, such as the $2,500 credit in California. For comparison, the Nissan Leaf starts at $29,650 without shipping costs for the stripped-down model and the upper SL i spriced at $35,690. The Ford Focus Electric has a $39,995 list price.

Five things the royal baby knows about the world

The fresh prince might be just a couple of hours old, but the future king of the UK already knows a surprising amount about the world.

1. Kate is the centre of his universe

While the baby might not know the story of Kate Middleton's journey from girl-next-door to Duchess of Cambridge he already knows her voice and smell, having already spent months getting used to them in the uterus. In one study, babies just a few hours old demonstrated a preference for their mum reading the Dr Seuss book And To Think That I Heard It On Mulberry Street over a stranger reading the same story.

Babies also seem to be attracted to their mother's smell. Newborns offered a choice between a clean and an unwashed breast will opt for the smellier one; five-day-old babies will also wriggle their way towards a cotton pad that has been worn by their mother. Recent research suggests that babies are being drawn towards smelly secretions from the nipples, rather than the scent of milk itself.

Within hours, the young heir will also have memorised Kate's face and should be able to pick her out from a group of similar-looking women, which is remarkable given newborns' relatively poor eyesightMovie Camera.

2. His future subjects are people, not dogs or horses

Babies seem hard-wired to appreciate the proportions of human faces and know that they hold special significance. Show a newborn a collection of shapes resembling a human face and it will choose to look at this over the same shapes organised into a random pattern. The little fellow also cares about whether people are paying attention to him or not. When newborn babies in Cambridge, UK, were shown a picture of a woman with her eyes open and another where her eyes were closed, the babies spent significantly longer looking at the open-eyed picture. Newborns also prefer to look at happy faces over sad faces ? and may even be able to contemplate their own future.

3. Being third in line to the British throne is different to being sixteenth

Baby Wales is now third in line to the throne, after his grandfather, Prince Charles, and dad, William. When Zara Phillips' baby is born in January, he or she will be sixteenth.

Although it will be some time before the fresh prince can count to 10, he already understands this difference. Until recently, people had assumed that an appreciation of numbers as abstract concepts was something you learned, rather than possessing from birth. But when newborn babies were played recordings of spoken syllables repeated a set number of times ? "ba ba ba", for example ? and shown collections of circles or squares on a screen, babies could spot when the numbers matched up. Separate studies have hinted that the brain contains specialised "accumulator neurons" that fire in response to different numbers of objects.

4. Essentials of the English language

Kate and William's baby does not yet speak his great-grandmother's English, but he already appreciates the uniqueness of the English language. For several months he has been hearing sounds from the outside world filtering in through the walls of Kate's uterus, and learning from them. Newborns recognise when someone switches to a different language, probably due to changes in their rhythm and intonation.

However, though babies may start categorising sounds and rhythms even before birth, they remain "international" in the sense that they can hear and discriminate all 150 speech sounds that occur across the world's languages until they are about nine months old. After that their brains begin to specialise, which is why Japanese speakers often fail to differentiate between "r" and "l" sounds, for example.

5. God Save the Queen has a beat

Ok, so the new future king cannot yet click his fingers in time with a tune, but newborns do seem tuned to detect rhythmMovie Camera from the moment they emerge. When adults are wired up to sensors that detect electrical signals in the brain and played a regular rhythm, their brain produces a characteristic signature if that rhythm is disrupted. The same is true of babies. When newborns were played variations of a rock rhythm in which certain beats were omitted, the babies' brains detected when the beat critical to the overall rhythm was removed.
