Microsoft's Revenue Pattern May Mirror Apple's

Microsoft (MSFT) could end up like Apple if its products are a big hit this fall. It is well known that at certain times during the year, Apple's (AAPL) revenue has a lull in anticipation of new product launches, like the iPhone 5 coming out toward the end of the year. If Microsoft emulates success this fall, like Apple does, it will provide investors a good opportunity to find an entry point for buying the stock and also set up a short term income play.

The tech giant appears to be pulling out all the stops on this one. When the Surface Tablet finally comes out, Microsoft is looking for one brand on it this time around and that is its own. Nokia (NOK) which has a tight alliance with the company's mobile phones, has been left out of the tablet market. It might be working on its own with Microsoft but nothing like the Surface. Acer, another ally of Microsoft, has not been silent on its concerns. There is worry that the company will start competing against its partners. Will it be detrimental to the PC industry as a whole? Should its partners, like Acer, keep relying on Microsoft or look for new alternatives? Time will tell.

Even though Microsoft is branding this one itself, it may be the recent pricing that has the most significant impact. If you haven't heard, the Nexus 7 being introduced by Google ( GOOG) was to have a huge impact upon the iPad this year because the software of the Google Nexus 7 which runs Android 4.1 is most similar to the iPad which runs iOS 5 because they both more or less run smartphone OSes. Google will be targeting the market for 7? tablets and enticed consumers with a significantly lower price point ($199.00) than the iPad. Well, recent sources indicated that there may be a good chance Microsoft's own Surface RT will cost just $199 when it comes out toward the end of October. At that price it will also line up against the Nexus 7 and even the Kindle Fire. It would put Windows 8 on the map in a big way.

If the Surface takes off at this new price, it could send quarterly revenues through the roof for the tech giant. It would emulate Apple's pattern of large revenue intake the last quarter of the year because of new product releases while the third quarter has a lull because costumers are waiting for the new products.

Arguably, the biggest hardware breakthrough of Microsoft's release is the included touch cover keyboard built into its case, helping to bridge the user ability gap between the tablet and laptop. The price line could be a major factor this fall. I have personally gone out and shopped for a new Ultrabook but decided to wait until this fall to see what the Surface looked like to see if I want to buy one. If I am thinking this way, I wonder how many other consumers like me are also thinking like this.

This creates a lull in spending as we wait for the new products. This lowers Microsoft's revenue and also removes any catalyst from influencing any significant moves. This sets up a good point for investors who are interested in owning the stock. Sometime this fall may provide a good entry point if one believes the new products coming out will be a hit. It also lets us set up a short term income play, anticipating no significant movement. The stock is presently consolidating from a bearish trend. The symmetrical triangle that has formed is giving us a hint at possible future direction.

Symmetrical Triangle

The stock has been consolidating in a symmetrical triangular pattern since early June. As defined at Stockcharts.com:

The symmetrical triangle, which can also be referred to as a coil, usually forms during a trend as a continuation Pattern. The pattern contains at least two lower highs and two higher lows. When these points are connected, the lines converge as they are extended and the symmetrical triangle takes shape. You could also think of it as a contracting wedge, wide at the beginning and narrowing over time.

It appears that if we look at a weekly chart it looks like this pattern is a continuation pattern of a recently started downtrend. So if the pattern follows suit, it should break out on the downside.

The Option Play

The stock is presently trading at 30.17 and if my theory holds true, I expect it to continue moving down when it breaks out of its continuation pattern. If its new products this fall become a hit, I would expect the stock to move up in price significantly come the first quarter of 2013. But until then, as I have written, look for a lull in revenue in anticipation of the new products coming out this fall. So my short term income play will be bearish here.

  • Buy a November 2012 put with a strike of '30' (priced at $1.32)
  • Sell a November 2012 put with a strike of '29' (priced at $0.89)
  • Net Debit to Start: $0.43
  • Maximum Profit: $0.57
  • Maximum Risk: net debit
  • Maximum Length of Play: 3 months

Reasoning behind the Trade

  • Microsoft is putting all its eggs into new products for the fall.
  • Consumers will wait before buying older products.
  • Symmetrical Triangle is a reliable continuation pattern and the stock has been bearish.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours.

Britney Spears, Mars Curiosity Tweet About Space

Britney Spears is apparently is on top of current events.

The singer, or whatever intern she has running her Twitter, was tweeting at NASA's Mars Curiosity rover earlier this week, and it was pretty funny!

The singer wrote, "So @MarsCuriosity... does Mars look the same as it did in 2000?" She included a link to her video for "Oops!...I Did It Again."

Britney Spears at The X Factor Auditions

Britney "visited" Mars in that video ... playing out an interplanetary love story and setting an intergalactic camel toe record with her red latex catsuit.

The best part? Mars Curiosity responded!

From the red planet (or at least the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.), the Cur-zizzle took a break from collecting samples to post:

Britney Tweet to Mars

Ooh, these two are totally flirting. Should Jason Trawick be worried?

Side note #1: Did NASA Mohawk Guy Bobak Ferdowsi write that?

Side note #2: That video came out 12 years ago, yet Britney Spears' career is still going strong despite a series of ups and downs. Impressive, B!

Is It Possible To Make A Living Being An Affiliate Marketer?

It may sound clich? but it is worth repeating. Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to earn money online. This internet business involves a revenue partnership between a web merchant and one or more affiliates, whereby the publisher or affiliate gets a commission for referring clicks, lead or sales to the merchant?s website. Once you are an affiliate marketer, then you are in business.

And you should take it seriously, like what successful entrepreneurs did for their business. But there?s one question that usually bothers an affiliate marketer wannabe: Is it possible to make a living being an affiliate marketer? The answer is YES! It can even bring you to the elite level or super affiliate stardom if you really focus and work hard on it.

An affiliate marketer is a website owner that is usually engaged in promoting one or more merchants and their affiliate programs. As mentioned, an affiliate marketer receives a commission every time his/her site visitor clicks the merchant?s site, sign-up, or buy the product or service offered by the web merchant. Most often, affiliate programs give a commission per sale. This affiliate commission can be a fixed dollar amount or a fixed percentage. Commission payment based on a fixed percentage level per sale can be more gratifying for the affiliate marketer if he/she is promoting and reselling high priced merchandise.

Affiliate marketing can provide a full-time profit for the affiliate marketers and it is among the few work from home opportunities that is fully automated. In other words, affiliate marketing makes you enjoy the flexibility of working for yourself and a choice to enjoy your life while making an income. The work of an affiliate marketer is uncomplicated ? you just have to refer people to someone else?s offer or you simply just need to promote the products and services offered in your merchant?s web site. If the merchant gain a profit from that customer, then a portion of that profit will be given to you as a commission.

But you should remember that aiming for successful online business like this one is not an easy task to accomplish. And it can?t be achieved overnight. If you want to make a living being an affiliate marketer, you need to find out and embrace some tactics and put everything in their respective place. It requires hefty time commitment and of course, blood and sweat. There are three important traits that you need to develop if you want to do well in this field, these are patience, persistence and thirst for knowledge.

Since it is your role to introduce possible buyer to the seller, you need to be equipped with some strategies and be engaged in some activities that will surely increase you affiliate commission. Join in chat rooms that are related to the product and services you are promoting. Make a free ebook containing advertisements and link of your affiliate website.

You can also start your own affiliate program directory and you can make your own affiliate program ads. Using a testimonial and personal endorsement ad can also help. Try to use a signature file in advertising the product you are promoting. Involve yourself in a web ring and join on web discussion board. Moreover, you can create your own private website and use it as a free bonus for those who purchase the product or service that you are promoting.

These are only few ways that will help you enhance your money making experience in the internet. You still need to know more tactics if you want to make a living being an affiliate marketer. Don?t forget that you have to be a great email marketer for you to promote your merchant?s goods and services. In fact, some successful affiliate marketers resort to bulk email marketing or they may employ email marketing software that can even lead to spamming.

Make a newsletter or free ezine and use it to advertise the affiliate program you are promoting. Super affiliates do this; they send this newsletters and ezines to customers with or without their approval. Aside from email and newsletter marketing, you also need to be good in search engine optimization and in link exchanges. The latter take the most important part in assuring that your website ranks well in search engines.

Equipped with expertise and necessary traits, you are more likely to generate more income from your website. Bear in mind that in affiliate marketing, you can gain income without a limit. Though not all affiliate marketers earns a big profit, still, it proves to be correct that you can make as much or as little as you want. So, who said that you can?t make a living being an affiliate marketer?

Can a cochlear implant help severe hearing loss? - Ask Doctor K ...

DEAR DOCTOR K:

I have severe hearing loss that hasn?t been helped by hearing aids. Could I be a candidate for a cochlear implant?

DEAR READER:

You sure could be. Cochlear implants are a relatively new technology; they weren?t available when I graduated from medical school. There often were no effective options for people like you with severe hearing loss. Even the most advanced hearing aids didn?t help. But since then, more than 200,000 people around the world have been helped by this technology.

To understand how a cochlear implant works, you need to understand how we hear. Hearing starts when little hairs inside your ear pick up sound waves. The hairs are in a snail-shaped part of your ear called the cochlea. When sound waves cause the hairs to vibrate, signals are sent up the hearing nerve (called the acoustic nerve) to the brain. The brain then interprets those signals and we hear sound.

Sensorineural hearing loss usually comes on gradually, caused by aging or by an ongoing exposure to loud noise. The hair cells in the cochlea can be damaged beyond repair. One way that happens is being exposed too often to very loud sounds ? such as operating a jackhammer, or attending too many rock concerts.

?

Cochlear implants are used only when a person has severe hearing loss in both ears, so extreme that even the best hearing aid doesn?t help.

If you are a good candidate for an implant, here is what happens in the procedure: An ear surgeon who specializes in cochlear implants places a wire inside your cochlea. The wire is attached to a tiny receiver, placed just inside your skull. Electrical signals through that wire stimulate the hearing nerve. You are under general anesthesia during the procedure and don?t feel anything.

Outside your ear you wear a little microphone that is attached to a transmitter. When the microphone picks up sound waves, it transmits a wireless signal to the receiver inside your skull. That signal travels down the wire into your cochlea and stimulates your hearing nerve.

Once your implant is in place, you must work with an audiologist to learn how to listen to and interpret sounds through the implant. Speech may sound mechanical, and other sounds may be unrecognizable at first. Just as important, you must be willing to put in the time and effort required to relearn how to hear. Rehabilitation can take up to a year.We have more information on cochlear implants in our Special Health Report, ?Hearing Loss.? You can learn more about this report here.

Although it takes work and time to learn how to hear again after a cochlear implant, the rewards can be enormous. You don?t absolutely need to restore hearing to carry on conversations, as people who are deaf can tell you. What my patients who have had cochlear implants talk most about are the sounds ? of the wind, the music, their grandchild laughing in the next room. That?s what makes the effort worthwhile.

'Teh Market' will cure what ails you, maybe | Smart Remarks ...

The print edition this week talk about how workaday conservatism is rooted, in large part, in resentment of the poor. There are a lot of reasons for this; but one is a fear that in providing for the poor, the gub?mint will take from the ?deserving.?

A day after I write that piece, I see this from the WSJ, about how ?Obamacare? means those who now have health insurance and see a doctor regularly are going to have to endure huge wait times, indeed de facto rationing, as a result of the great unwashed suddenly having access to medical care. Indeed, writes John G. Goodman, we?ll be creating a two-tiered system of medicine, where the wealthy will have their needs attended to by ?concierge medicine,? while you and I wait in line:

Most provisions of the Obama health law kick in on Jan. 1, 2014. Within the decade after that, an additional 30 million people are expected to acquire health plans?and if the economic studies are correct, they will try to double their use of the health-care system. ?
<snip>
Here is the problem: The health-care system can?t possibly deliver on the huge increase in demand for primary-care services. The original ObamaCare bill actually had a line item for increased doctor training. But this provision was zeroed out before passage, probably to keep down the cost of health reform. The result will be gridlock. ?

<snip>

Bottom line: To meet the promise of free preventive care nationwide, every family doctor in America would have to work full-time delivering it, leaving no time for all the other things they need to do?.

<snip>

As physicians increasingly have to allocate their time, patients in plans that pay below-market prices will likely wait longest. Those patients will be the elderly and the disabled on Medicare, low-income families on Medicaid, and (if the Massachusetts model is followed) people with subsidized insurance acquired in ObamaCare?s newly created health insurance exchanges.

Look, I have no quarrel with the basic premise that increased demand coupled with a relatively constrained supply of doctors could lead to these outcomes.

But what?s the alternative? I mean, really ? should the people currently without health care just pound sand?

Jobs are, obviously, hard to come by; and even those lucky enough to have jobs are seeing the cost of benefits rise. And don?t kid yourself, we?re on a trajectory where employer-provided benefits are going to be phased out completely.? You?ll get your vouchers or health-care coupons to provide you 70 percent off that $20,000 appendectomy. Good luck!

Bottom line, without health care reform, even fewer people will have access to health care on a normal basis in the future.

Goodman has written a book where he asserts that ? you guessed it ? ?the market? can solve all these problems. Make people buy their own health care, perhaps via health-savings accounts, and services will spring up to provide the care they can afford! Maybe! We hope!

You know, I absolutely accept that our current health care delivery system, if it can be called that, is the factor in the unsustainable rise in health-care costs. But while there are obviously millions of Americans who lack health care ? the whole reason for ?Obamacare? in the first place ? consider that Medicare and Medicaid have made health care accessible for millions who also would have gone without, without it.

And if ?the market? was such an efficient means of providing health care for all ? why did Medicare and Medicaid have to be passed in the first place?
