Prosthetic Retina Helps to Restore Sight in Mice

The device, which relies on new insights into how the brain decodes signals from the eye, could eventually be developed for use in humans

By Geoff Brumfiel of Nature magazine

Two neuroscientists have created a prosthesis that can partially restore the sight to blind mice. The device could eventually be developed for use in humans.

More than 20 million people worldwide become blind owing to the degeneration of their retina, the thin tissue at the back of the eye that turns light into a neural signal. Only one prosthesis has been approved for treatment of the condition ? it consists of an array of surgically implanted electrodes that directly stimulate the optic nerve and allow patients to discern edges and letters. Patients cannot, however, recognize faces or perform many everyday tasks.

Sheila Nirenberg, a physiologist at the Weill Medical College at Cornell University in New York thinks that the problem is at least partially down to coding. Even though the retina is as thin as tissue paper, it contains several layers of nerves that seem to encode light into neural signals. "The thing is, nobody knew the code," she says. Without it, Nirenberg believes that visual prostheses will never be able to create images that the brain can easily recognize.

Now, she and her student, Chethan Pandarinath, have come up with a code and developed a device that uses it to restore some sight in blind mice.

The duo began by injecting nerve cells in the retinas of their mice with a genetically engineered virus. The virus had been designed to insert a gene that causes the cells to produce a light-sensitive protein normally found in algae. When a beam of light was then shown into the eye, the protein triggered the nerve cells to send a signal to the brain, performing a similar function to healthy rod and cone cells.

Coded vision
Earlier efforts had managed to get this far, but Nirenberg and Pandarinath went a step further. Rather than feeding visual signals directly into the eye, they processed them using a code that the pair had developed by watching how a healthy retina responds to stimuli. After receiving the encoded input, the mice were able to track moving stripes, something that they hadn't been able to do before. The pair then looked at the neural signals that the mice were producing and used a different, 'untranslate', code to figure out what the brain would have been seeing. The encoded image was clearer and more recognizable than the non-encoded one (see image).

The importance of encoding has been debated among scientists working on visual prostheses, says James Weiland, an ophthalmologist at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Some think that it will be crucial, but others think the brain can adapt to an unprocessed signal. Nirenberg and Pandarinath have shown that encoding provides an advantage, he says, but how effective it is won't be known until the technique is tried out in people. "You can't say for sure until you have the patient telling you 'yes I see it. It's better when you do that'," he says.

Nirenberg hopes to test the system in human trials soon. The encoding is simple enough to be done by a microchip, which, together with a small video camera could fit onto a pair of glasses. The camera would record a signal and the encoder would then flash it directly onto the genetically treated nerve cells in the eye. If it works, the technique is simple enough that it could be done in a doctor's office. "We would like to [try it] in patients in the next one or two years," she says.

Sensible Home Improvement Tips ?

Millions of homeowners have home improvement projects on their minds. Many people add onto their house or upgrade it, while many people want to fix it up for cosmetic reasons. Most homes need improvements. The following article is a great way to learn how to improve your home without breaking the bank.

Take steps to ensure that your floors are protected from any stray drips while painting. You don?t want your flooring stained by wet paint. When painting, use newspapers on your floor to reduce staining. Try using a drop sheet or plastic to protect the floor of paint splashes.

To make a dreary or dated looking home feel vibrant and new, repaint the walls. A coat of paint will dramatically change the look and feel of almost any room. Paint is very affordable and can increase your home?s value. A good tip is to use light colors that look good with the decor of your home.

Don?t be too quick to demolish anything. Always check structural integrity behind walls, cabinets and other places well before you tear them down. The wall in question may contain electrical wiring, plumbing lines, or important equipment; disturbing these by accident can make your project a lot more expensive.

Use varnish and wallpaper to make a cheap, easy back-spash. Begin by purchasing wallpaper with a design that you love. You should always cut the wallpaper somewhat larger than the area you?re covering based on measurements you?ve taken. Apply a paste and allow it to sit until it is tacky. Then place the wallpaper and utilize a squeegee to remove any bubbles that appear. Create a perfect application by trimming away the excess paper. Varnish should then be brushed on. Enjoy your brand new back-splash.

Dust all of your home accessories frequently. Lots of dust can gather in a small period of time, causing allergens to accumulate. If you clean your home accessories you will rid yourself of bugs and the dirt!

Consider upgrading appliances as a simple home improvement option, in order to save money on utility bills. Replacing aging appliances with energy-efficient upgrades will reduce your utility bills and improve the value of your home. That makes them a great home improvement investment. Installing appliances can be simple and can make for an easy improvement option for your home.

When you are doing any outdoor projects, think about listening to some music. This is a great idea, but you do not want to use headphones, or else you will be unable to hear things that are important for your safety as well as that of the project.

Make sure you allocate an area for the debris to go when a large project is being undertaken. Demolition makes a big mess that you have to put somewhere. Know where the debris will go and how you will get rid of it, so that it does not interfere with your work or your life.

If you have chosen to do something major to your house, make sure it complements the construction and style of your entire house. Hardscapes and plantings that blend with the exterior of your home present a cohesive and attractive look.

When it comes to redecorating and remodeling, it is possible to find ideas in magazines, at home improvement shows and by using paint swatches. While you may not even be ready to launch your project quite yet, clipping and saving things that appeal to you can make life easier when you do start to work. As well, if you know what you want to do well in advance, you can start buying materials a bit at a time.

Just like you read about earlier, there is always interest in home improvement because of the added value it adds to your home. There is always work that can be done on a home. If you use these tricks and tips, you will find the project that can help your home?s appearance.

Fully Understanding The Feeling Of Happiness | Self Improvement ...

When we think of the feeling of happiness, it conjures up different ideas in our minds and feelings also. For some individuals it means one thing and to others something else. Happiness is a personal thing to each person and what they define it to be according to their lives. What you may perceive to be as happiness may in fact be disturbing and a source of sadness to another.

Fundamentally how one views happiness is based on one?s life, values and way of life. Our perception of happiness may not be how others, for instance your friends perceive it for themselves. If you believe going to parties makes you happy, it may do so for you but not necessarily your pal. Your friend may prefer to stay at home and watch movies for happiness. No one can dictate to another what they should do for their happiness.

The exception would be somebody who derives their happiness from physically or emotionally hurting other people that do not want to be hurt. Noone has got the right to harm another for happiness when the other does not agree to it. And if the individual consents out of fear, then that?s not free will either. That is self preservation. Even self destructive folk under the guise of happiness who only hurt themselves have a problem that should be addressed by a professional.

By definition, happiness is defined as a state of mind and being. This state includes a feeling of being content, love, satisfaction, joy and/or pleasure. This definition does not include folks who harm either themselves or others in the name of happiness. First of all, if one harms somebody else either physically or mentally for no good reason and the other individual is not consenting to that, there is something really wrong with the picture.

Normal people don?t agree to being abused or hurt either physically or emotionally. In this situation, the person doing the hurting has a very serious problem and their definition of happiness is surely distorted to say the least. In this case, the person that has an obvious problem needs immediate help either from a professional or a law enforcer. This is even more serious if the other party that they are inflicting harm on isn?t a consenting adult. This person?s behaviour must be addressed immediately they are a danger under the guise of happiness.

It is hard to extract the features of happiness because they?re socially and culturally defined. Happiness is interpreted by people based on where they live in the world. An example would be going to the beach in some parts of the world and other parts going skiing. Despite location, there are some universal characteristics of happiness.

It is the Universal consensus that happiness is indeed premised on the idea of having positive emotions. The same positive emotions permeate the person being and reflect in their life as such. All around the world, folks agree on these three things as the foundation of happiness; pleasure, engagement and having a life that?s meaningful with purpose by their definition. It is a unanimous idea that we need a feeling of pleasure, be engaged and interact with others and have a life that we feel is worthwhile to be happy.

Allen Temple to host 35th Annual Health Fair - Saturday Aug. 18 ...

The 35th Annual Holistic Health Fair at the Allen Temple Baptist Church in East Oakland is this Saturday, Aug. 18.

Last year, the Allen Temple Baptist Church in East Oakland held its 34th Annual Free Holistic Health Fair. About 46 percent of the East Bay community that attended the event did not have health care insurance.

This year, the church campus and Family Life Center is expected to again draw a large crowd at the 35th installment of the free fair scheduled for this Saturday, Aug. 18.

According to Dr. Shirley Evers-Manly, former chair of the Allen Temple health education committee, the reason why the church continues to have the fair every year is because there is a huge need for health services in East Oakland.

"I think they appreciate, a diverse community can come together for the screenings," Evers-Manly said. "We just don't screen them; we get them what they need."

The Allen Temple Health Education Ministry - with the help from many local organizations - will offer more than $1,000 worth of free prevention screenings at the health fair, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Allen Temple is located at 8501 International Blvd. in Oakland.

The partnership between the church and local organizations is an attempt by both sides to emphasize physical fitness, address adult and childhood obesity and healthy eating in the community.

"Getting individuals to partner agencies is really important," Evers-Manly said. "We've been able to do these things in a timely manner."

Some of the health care screenings that people can participate in include: diabetes, HIV/AIDS, blood pressure, cholesterol and prostate cancer.

In addition, the public also can receive foot, dental, eye and breast examinations throughout the day while enjoying from music, free clothes, haircuts, raffles and free food courtesy of the Food Bank.

"Eye screenings are always very popular," Evers-Manly said. "Normally, 1,000 to 3,000 people come to the event. Last year, 237 people participated in the free lunch service."

Other resources available at this one-day event are free legal advice/counseling, nutrition information, information on health and health awareness, early detection and treatment of disease and on assistance programs, and free full sports physicals approved by the Oakland Unified School District.

More than 100 organizations will be on hand to distribute resources and information at different booths. Due to the tough economic climate, Evers-Manly said the health fair provides the perfect opportunity for an entire family to check the status of their health for free.

"The ministry really reaches out to all of our brothers and sisters," she said. "We get a rate of 47 people an hour. Of our visitors, 64 percent are female and 36 percent are male. As for the ages of the participants, it ranges from 2 to 92."

Will Paul Ryan lose Ohio for the GOP?

A specter is haunting Ohio: the specter of John W. Bricker.

Sixty-eight years ago, the Republican presidential nominee picked Bricker, the Ohio Governor and future Senator, as his running-mate. The choice is the likely reason why Thomas E. Dewey defeated Franklin D. Roosevelt in the Buckeye State by 12,000 votes--a margin of 0.37 percent.

[Slideshow: Romney-Ryan 2012]

As I traveled through central Ohio last week--before Mitt Romney chose Paul Ryan for his ticket--I heard a constant refrain that Rob Portman, the Republican senator from Ohio, could provide Romney with the margin of victory in the state in November.

And it wasn?t just from Republicans like Rep. Pat Tiberi (who would have been a leading contender to fill Portman?s Senate seat had he won). ?Senator Portman on the ticket would help tremendously in southwestern Ohio, where he's from,? Tiberi said. ?That is the Republican bastion of the state, and that's where he would help, I think, drive up support for the Romney ticket.?

[Related: Ryan's constituents sound off]

That was also the view of Joe Hallett, the lead political writer for the Columbus Dispatch, and a 30-year veteran of Ohio campaigns. Hallett thought a Portman nod would appeal to ?Ohio pride.? So convinced was he that, after Romney went with Ryan, Hallett wrote that in shunning the Bricker example, ?Romney might have blown his best chance to win the most crucial state in the election.?

But if Ryan left some Ohioans disappointed--along with Rubio fans in Florida, McConnell devotees in Virginia, and New Christie Minstrels in New Jersey--it was a gambit that reflected a very sound political judgment on the part of Romney: From the Republican perspective, a debate on broad principles of government is far superior to a debate over Mitt Romney.

Whatever the assets of a Portman (or a Tim Pawlenty), they are political figures whose governing philosophy is vague at best. Such a choice would have not helped to frame the campaign conversation around the philosophy of government: its purpose, scope, and limits. It would have kept the focus squarely on Romney the Man, because trying to discover his core set of principles brings to mind Gertrude Stein?s famous observation about Oakland: ?When you get there, there?s no there there.?

In the absence of clear principles, the same annoying questions about Romney would have remained front and center: the off-shore accounts, the taxes, the ?who-is-this-guy?? mantra. They are questions his supporters insist are distractions from President President Barack Obama?s record--which is exactly the point.

No election is ever just a?referendum? or ?choice?. They are always both. And no challenger can bank on discontent with an incumbent unless that challenger can put doubts about his values and character to rest.

In this sense, Romney has already succeeded, at least temporarily, by triggering? a spate of ?game change,? ?reset,? and ?new ballgame? stories that have swept aside the questions over his taxes, foreign bank accounts, and policy twists worthy of an Olympic gold medal. Never mind that Etch A Sketch metaphor used by a top Romney advisor; this shift in focus is more like an instant remaking of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The conservative commentariat, previously dubious of Romney, now appears to believe he has ingested not just Ryan?s worldview, but those of Hayek, von Mises, Nock, and Rand (at least the non-atheist part).

For most observers, the question seems to be whether voters will reject Ryan?s vision of government that has now been surgically grafted onto the Romney campaign. Will seniors will run screaming from a vision of health insurance vouchers? Will the inevitable slashing of programs will prove too draconian?

My question is different: I wonder how long it will be before the focus of attention shifts back to Mitt Romney.

As a general proposition, campaigns do not linger on the vice-presidential nominee. When they do, it?s always meant very bad news for the ticket. Think of Spiro Agnew?s foot-in-mouth disease; Tom Eagelton?s medical history; the real-estate holdings of Geraldine Ferraro?s husband; the unbearable lightness of Dan Quayle; Sarah Paiin?s reading list. There is no evidence that Paul Ryan would find himself the center of such unwelcome attention.

There is also no evidence that the ideas of a running mate have ever commanded center stage, More important, there is no evidence over the last six years of campaigning that Mitt Romney is eager to have a conversation with the electorate about what he believes, and what he intends to do with the power of the presidency.

That means that as the autumn leaves begin to fall, those questions about Mitt Romney the man may well begin to rise again. And he may find himself thinking wistfully about John W. Bricker.

Romney Aide: Ryan Will Focus on Iowa

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Mitt Romney's campaign plans to make extensive use of new running mate Paul Ryan in Iowa, a state where Romney's opposition to a federal wind energy tax credit has given Democrats hope they can prevail there.

"We have a number of states that are competitive where we believe he helps us," Romney senior advisor Kevin Madden told reporters on Sunday. "Obviously, his home state of Wisconsin and some of these other Great Lake states. But Iowa in particular, that is a state where I think his life story is important for others, something that I think helps him connect with a lot of those voters there."

Romney's opposition to the wind tax credit has created concern among Iowa Republicans. The credit costs the federal government $1.6 billion annually and is due to expire at the end of this year. About 7,000 people work in the wind-energy sector in Iowa, making it the nation's second-largest wind producing state. The state could lose up to 3,000 jobs if the tax credit is not renewed, according to the American Wind Energy Association.

Most recent Hawkeye State polls show Romney and President Obama in a dead heat.

"It's going to be close there, I believe, all the way until Election Day," Madden said. "But we think with the more they get to see of Congressman Ryan, the more they get to hear about the Romney/Ryan message on fixing the economy, that we're going to continue to do well there."

Madden also said that Ryan and Romney would campaign "on different tracks" until the GOP convention. He said Ryan would not make an initial visit to Florida, but denied it had anything to do with the House Budget Committee chairman's controversial plans for reshaping Medicare, which the Obama campaign thinks will turn off seniors in Florida and elsewhere.

"This has more to do with expanding our bandwidth," he said. "Governor Romney is going to be talking about the issues that are important to Floridians. And I think Congressman Ryan?s going to be able to be down in Florida during this campaign and will be doing the same, at some point."
